- Care Home
We are Victoria Lodge, a residential care home in Brierley Hill. We look after older people, including those living with dementia and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we also support younger adults. Respite stays are available. We aim for something domestic rather than institutional. People bring their own furniture and pictures, keep their own habits, and decide for themselves how their day runs. What time you wake, where you eat, whether you want company or would rather sit quietly: those are your decisions and they stay that way. A great deal of what makes a day here good is quite unremarkable, and we would rather describe it plainly than make grand claims. For people living with dementia we work with the person as they are now. Knowing their history, recognising early what tends to unsettle them and having the patience to go at their pace prevents a lot of distress before it begins. Where somebody has a sight or hearing impairment, we pay proper attention to how they prefer to be given information, because that is the basis of everything else rather than a detail. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour. Please ring us to arrange a visit.

- Care Home
Abbeygate Care Centre is a residential care home in Brierley Hill. We support older people, including those living with dementia, people living with mental ill health, people with physical disabilities and people whose sight or hearing is impaired. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. We aim for a home that runs around the people in it. Rooms are personal, the day is not dictated by a timetable, and visitors are welcome at sensible hours without an appointment. People choose when to get up, what to eat and how much company they want, and our staff are there to help rather than to organise everybody into the same pattern. Support covers washing, dressing, medication, meals and moving about, along with the practical adjustments that make daily life workable when sight or hearing has changed. For people living with dementia we keep things familiar and take our time, and we ask families to tell us about a person's life because that history is usually the key to understanding what somebody needs. Where mental ill health is part of the picture we work alongside community teams and GPs rather than around them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and look round, meet the team and speak to relatives of people who already live here before deciding anything.

- Care Home
Kathleen House is a care home in Brierley Hill. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, we support people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Something we pay particular attention to is what happens as people get older. Needs change with age for everybody, and for somebody with a learning disability those changes are too often missed or put down to the disability itself. Dementia in particular can go unrecognised for a long time. We watch for it, we take it seriously, and we adapt the support rather than expecting the person to adapt to us. The people living here have a genuine say in the ordinary decisions. What is bought and cooked, how their rooms look, where they go and who comes to visit. Communication gets the most attention. Where speech is not how a person tells us things, we learn the way they do, and we treat behaviour as information. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and social workers are welcome to visit and ask us anything.

- Care Home
Amberley Care Home in Brierley Hill provides residential care to older people and younger adults, including many residents living with dementia. We think a care home should feel like somewhere you live rather than somewhere you have been placed, and most of what we do follows from that. In practice it means flexible mornings, because not everyone wants to be up and dressed at the same hour. It means meals that people look forward to, cooked here and adjusted happily for anyone who fancies something else. It means keeping a person's own furniture, photographs and habits around them, so the room they sleep in is recognisably theirs. Dementia care asks for patience rather than correction. If a resident is anxious, or looking for a person or place from an earlier part of their life, we respond to the feeling rather than arguing with the facts, and we work out what will genuinely settle them. Life history matters here, and we gather it early from the people who know someone best. Families are welcome throughout the day, and we would far rather you told us when something is not right than kept it to yourself. We also offer respite stays for shorter periods, which families often use to cover a break from caring.

- Care Home
Rosewood Care Home is in Brierley Hill. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and those with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available. We would rather be straightforward with you. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We accepted the findings, we have been working through them, and anybody considering the home should ask us directly what has changed and what is still to be put right. We would think less of a family that did not ask. What we are trying to offer is not complicated, though it is hard to do consistently. A comfortable house where people are looked after properly, treated as adults and left in charge of their own days as far as they are able. That begins with asking how somebody has always lived and then actually working that way rather than fitting people to a routine that suits the rota. Dementia care here depends on familiarity. We keep staffing as steady as we can, we do not hurry anybody, and we take the trouble to learn what reassures a particular person. For residents with physical disabilities we look at equipment and at how the building is arranged so that independence is protected where it can be. Families are welcome through the day and are kept properly informed. Please come and look round, speak to residents and relatives, and judge the place for yourself.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Brierley Hill
Dementia care asks something specific of a home, and the registration alone does not tell you whether it is done well. What matters is whether staff are trained to respond to confusion and distress rather than contain it, whether the building helps people find their way, and whether a resident who walks frequently has somewhere safe to do so. Ask how many staff hold dementia training and how often it is refreshed.
Where the grades sit
Abbeygate Care Centre, Victoria Lodge and Kathleen House are each rated Good. Rosewood Care Home currently holds Requires Improvement, and Amberley Care Home has been rated Inadequate, which is the regulator's lowest grade. A low grade reflects one inspection and homes do improve, but it calls for the report to be read in full and the manager to be asked directly what has changed since.
What to watch on a visit
Notice whether residents are occupied or simply seated, and ask what happens when someone becomes distressed in the evening. Ask about staff turnover, since familiar faces matter more to someone with memory loss than any feature of the building. Ask whether the garden is secure and genuinely used, and what the home does if needs progress beyond its registration.
Choosing between dementia care homes in Brierley Hill
A care needs assessment comes before any contract, costs nothing and establishes whether residential dementia care is the right level of support. Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council is responsible for that assessment and for the financial assessment that follows it, and a relative can request both with the person's consent. A carer living with the person is separately entitled to an assessment of their own needs.
How funding is decided
Savings, income and, in a permanent placement, usually the value of a property are set against the national capital thresholds. Capital above the upper threshold means fees are met privately. Below the lower threshold only income is counted, with a weekly personal allowance protected, and a deferred payment arrangement can delay a sale.
What to expect on fees
Residential dementia care is priced below nursing care, since the support is personal rather than clinical, though homes with specialist dementia provision often charge above the standard residential rate locally. Attendance allowance and the daily living part of personal independence payment are not means tested. Where a council contribution is less than a home's private fee, confirm in writing whether a third party payment is expected.
Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Brierley Hill
How many dementia care homes are there in Brierley Hill?
Brierley Hill has 5 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 10 CQC registered care homes in Brierley Hill: 3 Good, 1 Requires improvement, 1 Inadequate. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
Which dementia care homes in Brierley Hill were inspected most recently?
Amberley Care Home (19 March 2026), Victoria Lodge (21 July 2022) and Rosewood Care Home (7 July 2021) have the most recent CQC reports.
Which homes in Brierley Hill provide dementia care?
Five residential care homes covering Brierley Hill are registered to support people living with dementia: Amberley Care Home, Rosewood Care Home, Abbeygate Care Centre, Victoria Lodge and Kathleen House. Abbeygate Care Centre, Victoria Lodge and Kathleen House are each rated Good by the Care Quality Commission. Rosewood Care Home holds Requires Improvement and Amberley Care Home has been rated Inadequate. Each profile links through to the inspection report behind its grade, which is worth reading in full here.
What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?
A dementia care home provides residential personal care, covering help with washing, dressing, meals, prompting medication and supervision through the day and night. A dementia nursing home adds registered nurses on duty at all hours and can manage clinical needs such as wound care, tube feeding or palliative nursing. Many people live well in residential dementia care for years and only need nursing in the later stages. All five homes listed for Brierley Hill are residential rather than nursing.
What should be asked when visiting a dementia care home in Brierley Hill?
Ask what proportion of staff hold dementia training, how often it is refreshed and what the turnover is like, because familiar faces matter a great deal to someone with memory loss. Ask how the home responds to distress or agitation and whether any restrictive practice is used. Visit at a mealtime and watch how residents needing help to eat are supported. Where a home holds a lower grade, ask what has changed since the inspection and ask to see the action plan.
How is a care needs assessment arranged in Brierley Hill?
Ask Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council for an adult social care needs assessment, which anyone can request, including a relative acting with the person's consent. There is no charge and the outcome does not depend on income or savings. An assessor will look at memory, daily living, mobility, medication and night time needs before recommending a level of care. A carer can also request a separate carer's assessment in their own right.
Can Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council fund a dementia placement?
Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council can fund or contribute towards a placement where the needs assessment confirms residential dementia care is appropriate and the financial assessment shows capital below the upper threshold. Anyone above that threshold meets the fees privately, though the needs assessment is still worth having. A deferred payment agreement may be available where most of the capital sits in a property. Where the council rate falls short of a home's fee, ask in writing who would be liable for the difference.
How far ahead should a family start looking?
Looking early is worth doing even when a move still feels distant, because dementia progresses unevenly and the decision often arrives sooner than expected. Six to eight weeks allows for repeat visits, a careful read of the reports and a resolved funding position. A crisis admission or hospital discharge rarely allows that, so a shortlist held in reserve is valuable. Where grades vary as much as they do here, that reading time matters more than usual.
