- Care Home
We are a residential care home in Atherstone, providing a home for older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. Our aim is a settled house where help is close at hand without taking over somebody's life. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Where someone needs help with washing, dressing or moving about, we try to give it without hurry and without doing more of the task than is actually needed, because what a person can still manage themselves is worth protecting. Dementia care rests on knowing the person rather than following a procedure, so we ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits. Where sight or hearing is poor, small habits matter a great deal: saying who you are on coming into a room, speaking clearly and not moving things about without saying so. Meals are cooked here and we listen when somebody would rather have something different. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and look round before deciding anything. We will be straight with you about whether we can meet the needs you describe.

- Care Home
We are a residential care home in Atherstone, providing a home for people who need help with daily living, and a good deal of our work is with people living with dementia. Our aim is an unhurried house. A great deal of care is spoiled simply by being rushed, so we try to give people the time to wash, dress and eat at their own pace, and to sit with somebody who wants to talk rather than moving straight on to the next task. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Dementia care, as we have come to understand it, is mostly a matter of knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that knowledge is what allows a member of staff to reassure somebody who is frightened or cannot place where they are. It is worth a great deal more than any written procedure. Family and friends are welcome whenever they would like to come, and we would always rather a concern was raised early than saved up. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and see the home for yourself before deciding anything.

- Care Home
Merevale House is a residential care home in Atherstone, Warwickshire. We provide residential care for adults who can no longer manage on their own, and a large part of our work is caring for people living with dementia. We are not a nursing home, and it is worth being clear about that. What we offer is residential care: help with washing and dressing, medication given on time, meals cooked here, laundry done, and staff on duty through the night as well as the day. Doctors and district nurses come in when clinical care is needed. For a great many people this is exactly the right level of support, and it takes far less from their independence than a clinical setting would. Dementia asks something particular of a home. It asks for a day that runs in a familiar order, for surroundings that are easy to make sense of, and for staff who do not correct or argue but go where the person is. We take time to learn about somebody's working life, family and habits, because that is what allows us to understand them when words begin to fail. Respite and short stays are available, whether for a planned break or for recovery. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. You are welcome to visit Merevale House and see the place for yourself.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Atherstone
Dementia care generally costs more than general residential care because of the staffing it requires, and that single fact makes the funding question worth opening before any home is visited. The starting point is a care needs assessment, which costs nothing and is open to anybody who appears to need care and support, whatever their savings. For dementia it does more than establish eligibility, since the written record it produces describes the routines and triggers a home will have to work with.
The assessment and the council's part
Assessments are arranged through the Warwickshire County Council social care team, the body responsible for adult social care and for funded support in this area. A separate financial assessment then examines capital and income to establish what, if anything, the council will contribute. Asking for both at the same time avoids running one after the other. A relative can make the request on somebody else's behalf, and a hospital social work team can start the process for an inpatient.
Fees and what they cover
Above the national capital threshold a placement is privately funded. Below it the council contributes on a means tested basis and the resident keeps a protected weekly allowance for personal spending. Where relatives top up fees to secure a particular home, that arrangement should be written down and understood by everybody beforehand. No single local figure applies to fees, so ask each home in writing what its fee covers, what sits outside it and how often it is reviewed. Continuing healthcare funding comes from the health service and follows its own route.
Choosing between dementia care homes in Atherstone
Looking past three matching ratings
Merevale House, Bracebridge Court and Merevale House Residential Home all hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission. Each rating summarises five separate judgements about whether a home is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, and for dementia the responsive judgement is often the telling one, because it describes how well a home adapts to the person in front of it. The full reports can be opened from every profile listed here.
What to watch for on a visit
Call in around a mealtime and watch how staff approach somebody who is confused or distressed, because a calm and unhurried tone tells you more than any brochure. Ask how long the people on shift have worked at the home, what dementia training they have had and who leads on it. Ask what the home does when a resident walks with purpose, wakes repeatedly at night or refuses personal care, and look at whether residents are occupied rather than simply sitting.
Thinking a step ahead
None of these homes holds nursing registration, so ask at the outset what each will continue to manage as dementia advances and at what point it would say it could no longer cope. A clear answer now can prevent a second move later.
Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Atherstone
How many dementia care homes are there in Atherstone?
Atherstone has 3 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 5 CQC registered care homes in Atherstone: 3 Good. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
Which dementia care homes in Atherstone were inspected most recently?

Can Warwickshire County Council fund a dementia care home placement?
It can, where a financial assessment shows that the person's capital and income fall below the national threshold. Warwickshire County Council is responsible for adult social care in this area and will assess both what the person needs and what they are able to contribute. Support is commonly partial rather than complete, with an assessed amount paid from income while a protected personal allowance is kept. If a family wants a home costing more than the council will meet, a written top up agreement covers the difference.
How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Atherstone?
Contact the adult social care team at Warwickshire County Council and ask for a care needs assessment, which is free and open to anyone who appears to need care whatever their savings. A relative can make the request on someone else's behalf, and a hospital social work team can begin it if the person is currently an inpatient. Ask for the financial assessment at the same time so that the two run in parallel. Taking a written note of recent incidents and changes into the assessment helps it reflect the reality of dementia rather than a good day.
How far ahead should we start looking?
Start earlier than feels necessary, because dementia tends to progress in steps rather than smoothly and the moment of change rarely waits for a vacancy. A few weeks gives time to visit each home more than once, read the inspection reports properly and get an assessment under way without deciding in a crisis. With only three homes listed locally, an early start also leaves room to widen the search if none proves suitable. Hospital discharge compresses everything, so ask the hospital social work team to begin the assessment before discharge is agreed.
Which providers in Atherstone offer dementia care?
Three providers currently match this search, and all three are registered residential care homes. They are Merevale House, Bracebridge Court and Merevale House Residential Home. Each holds a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission and has its own profile here carrying the full inspection report. The list reflects current registration data, so it will change as homes open, close or are reinspected.
What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Atherstone?
Ask what dementia training the staff have had, who leads on it and how long the people on duty have worked at the home. Find out what the staffing level is overnight, because night time waking is common and thin night cover becomes obvious quickly. Ask how the home responds when a resident walks with purpose, becomes distressed or refuses personal care. Request the most recent inspection report so you can put any findings to the manager directly, and try to be there during a mealtime.
How does a dementia care home differ from a dementia nursing home?
A dementia care home supports people with everyday living, meaning help with washing, dressing, medication and meals from trained care staff. A dementia nursing home carries an additional registration requiring a qualified nurse on the premises at all times, which lets it manage clinical needs alongside dementia, such as swallowing difficulties or an unstable long term condition. All three providers listed for Atherstone are registered as residential care homes. Because dementia progresses, it is worth asking at the outset what a home will and will not continue to manage, so that a further move can be avoided.
