About Holly House
Holly House is a residential care home in Houghton Le Spring, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. We also offer respite stays. We are deliberately small. That means quiet attention rather than scale: somebody notices when you are subdued, and the household bends to suit its members. Rooms are arranged as people want them, the shopping and the menu are genuinely discussed, and decisions about the house get made together. Jobs and courses are the point rather than an extra. Predictability is something we take particularly seriously. For many of those living here, knowing exactly what is happening and who will be on shift is the difference between a settled day and a difficult one, so we plan ahead and explain changes early. People keep control of their own money and belongings as far as they are able, and where they need help with that we are transparent about it. Declining to join in is always allowed. We ask, we ask again another day, and we do not treat a preference for solitude as a problem to be solved. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We do not think any single word covers a place where people live.
