About No. 18
Our home at No 18 in Launceston is a small residential care home supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic people. Respite stays are available too, giving families a planned break in the knowledge that the person they care for is settled. Being small is deliberate rather than a limitation. Being properly known by the people who support you changes every hour of the day, and that is far easier in a house than in a large setting. The staff team stays consistent, the shape of the week holds, changes are explained before they happen, and we pay attention to noise, light and the sensory details that decide whether somebody can settle. Support covers personal care, medication, meals, money and the practical business of running a home. Wherever we can we do things alongside people rather than for them, and we are patient about it. A task done slowly by the person themselves is a better outcome than the same task done quickly by us. We are also interested in what people actually want from life. Work, college, hobbies, seeing family, getting out to places that matter to them. Our job is to make those things happen rather than to fill the day with activities chosen on somebody's behalf. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families, social workers and anyone considering the house for somebody they support are welcome to visit and ask us anything at all.
