About Newport Square
Newport Square is a residential care home in Launceston, Cornwall. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people who need a short break or whose regular carer needs one. This is a home rather than an institution, and the people who live here run their own lives in it. Everybody has a support plan written with them, in a form they can use, covering how they like to be supported, what they enjoy, what they find hard and what they want to be doing with their time. Being in a small Cornish town has real advantages. People are known in the shops and around the square, they keep up the clubs and activities they like, they see family, and they go out without it being an expedition. We support all of that rather than managing it down to whatever is easiest for us. Communication is where we concentrate. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they do tell us things and make sure every member of the team understands. When someone becomes distressed we treat it as communication and look for the cause, and anything that restricts a person's freedom is agreed properly, recorded and reviewed with a view to reducing it. The Care Quality Commission rated us good overall at our most recent inspection. Families, advocates and professionals are welcome to visit.
