We are a residential care home on Lyndhurst Road in Hove, caring for older people and for adults with a learning disability, including people living with dementia. We are close to the shops and the seafront, which means the people who live here can stay part of the town rather than set apart from it. The house runs at a domestic pace. Help with washing, dressing, mobility and medication is given discreetly and when it suits the person, and we go to some trouble to learn how someone has always liked things done before they move in. Those preferences are written down and staff are expected to follow them. For people living with dementia we keep routines steady and staff familiar, and we use what we know about a person's life to make conversation and to settle them when they are unsettled. For adults with a learning disability we plan around what somebody can already do and support the rest, using whatever way of communicating already works for them. Meals are cooked here, families and friends can visit as often as they like, and we would far rather hear a small concern early than a large one later. Short respite stays are available.
