About Portelet Cottage

Portelet Cottage is a small residential care home in Bournemouth for older people, including those living with dementia. Being small is the point. Staff know everybody who lives here properly, not from a file, and residents know the staff, which makes the day feel more like a household than a facility. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and everything else that has become hard to manage alone, and we do it at the pace of the person rather than the pace of a rota. For residents living with dementia, a familiar face, a familiar chair and a day that follows the same shape all help a great deal, so we keep changes to a minimum and explain what is happening as we go. Mealtimes matter here. We cook food people recognise, ask what they actually fancy and never rush anyone through a plate. Residents choose how much company they want, whether that is sitting in the lounge with everyone or a quiet afternoon in their own room with the door shut. We also offer respite stays, which can give a family carer a break or allow someone to try life here before making a longer decision. Families are welcome to drop in, to stay for a cup of tea and to tell us when something could be better. If you would like to see the house, just ring and arrange a time.
