Nursing Homes in Leicestershire
In total twenty nine nursing homes are registered across Leicestershire, each able to keep qualified nurses on the premises alongside care staff at every hour of the day and night. Their published judgements vary, with one home rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission and twenty rated Good, while five sit at Requires Improvement and three have no published rating as yet. Leicestershire County Council is responsible for carrying out the care needs assessment that should sit behind any placement and for deciding what funded support a person qualifies for once income and capital have been assessed, so approaching it early is rarely wasted effort. Where the judgements differ, the rating does genuine work as a first filter, though it stops there. Planning and paying for nursing care in Leicestershire
Establishing the clinical need
Nursing care depends on a health need being present, and that is settled by assessment rather than assumption. An assessment of need is free, open to anyone who appears to require support and unaffected by savings. It examines mobility, continence, medication, nutrition, memory and the nursing tasks involved, ending in a care and support plan that describes what a home would have to provide. Request one from Leicestershire County Council social care, which is responsible for assessments and for agreeing the funded support that follows. Relatives providing unpaid care can be assessed in their own right.
Three routes to funding
The council route rests on a financial assessment of income, savings and capital, which in a permanent placement usually includes the value of a property unless a partner or certain other relatives still live in it. Because nursing is involved, NHS Funded Nursing Care contributes towards the nursing element and is paid directly to the home, while NHS Continuing Healthcare can cover the entire cost where a person's needs are primarily health related. Each is decided separately, and no part of the system reliably explains the others, so ask about all three.
Fees and the longer view
Ask what the weekly charge includes and what is billed on top, whether chiropody, hairdressing, continence products or transport to appointments. Ask how often fees are reviewed and what the last rise amounted to. Ask what the home does when a self funding resident's capital runs down and council support becomes necessary, because that answer decides whether another move could be forced at a difficult time.

Reading the record properly
One home in this listing holds an Outstanding judgement, twenty are rated Good, five sit at Requires Improvement and three carry no published rating. Where no rating exists it usually reflects recent registration rather than a concern, but it leaves you without an independent account and should prompt fuller questions. For the rest, check the inspection date, then read what was said about staffing levels, medicines management and how residents spend their days.
Nursing cover is the question to press
Ask how many registered nurses are rostered by day and overnight, and how much of that cover comes from agency staff. Ask what the staffing looks like in the small hours rather than mid afternoon. Ask how falls, pressure areas, chest infections and end of life care are handled, how readily a GP attends, how long the manager has been in post and what turnover among nurses has been.
Seeing a home for yourself
Visit at a mealtime, when the pressure on staff is greatest, rather than during a quiet afternoon. Watch how residents needing help to eat are supported, how long call bells ring before anyone comes, and whether staff use people's names as they pass. Notice whether anyone has been left alone with nothing to occupy them. Then return on a different day at a different hour before deciding.
