Our job is to make that practical rather than to take over. Depending on what is needed, that might be a single morning call to help someone wash, dress and get the day going, several visits a day covering personal care, medication, meals and company, or a longer sit so a family carer can have a few hours to themselves. The first conversation is where the work really starts. We want to know how the day usually runs, what has become hard, and what the person can still do perfectly well and would rather we left to them. Support planned that way feels like help rather than interference, and it holds up better when things change. Continuity is where we put our effort. A familiar carer who knows the house, the routine and the person does more good than any amount of paperwork, and that is especially true where dementia is involved.
