A large part of our work is with older people. That means help with washing and dressing, getting up and settling at night, medication, cooking, shopping, laundry and keeping the house in order, and it also means company, which for someone who lives alone is not a luxury. We support people with a physical disability, working around the equipment and routines that already suit them rather than imposing our own, and we work with younger adults who want practical help to run their own lives. We are clear with ourselves about the two things that make home care work. Visits need to be long enough to do properly, and the same carers need to keep coming. When both are true, personal care stops being an ordeal, and our carers know somebody well enough to notice when they are off colour and to raise it early. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Instead of pointing at a badge, we would ask you to test us with questions, how we recruit, what training our carers get, how we supervise them, what happens when a call runs late and who answers the telephone at the weekend.
