We take the view that most people manage far better in familiar surroundings, and our job is to make staying at home practical for as long as it sensibly can be. We support older people who need help with the everyday tasks that have become harder, washing and dressing, medication, meals, shopping and getting out of the house safely. We also support people living with dementia, where continuity and patience achieve more than any amount of written instruction handed to somebody new, and people living with a physical disability, where good support is mostly about making daily life workable again rather than quietly taking tasks away from a person. We plan our visits so that people see the same small group of carers. It means nobody has to explain themselves every time, and it means our team notice early when somebody is eating less, sleeping badly or simply not themselves. We have not yet received an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission, and we would rather say so openly. Until we do, judge us on the ordinary things, whether calls happen on time, whether the office answers the phone and whether we are honest when we cannot do something.
