4 Manchester Road is a residential care home in Buxton, Derbyshire. We support older people, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people living with mental ill health, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss, including younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays. That is a broad range, and it works because we are specific about each person rather than general about everybody. Every plan is written with the individual, reviewed regularly, and shared with the professionals involved in their care. Where somebody has a physical disability we think carefully about equipment, seating and access; where somebody has a learning disability or is autistic we concentrate on predictable routines, clear information and understanding how that person communicates; where dementia or mental ill health is part of the picture we keep the day recognisable and work closely with the community teams. We should be honest about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out plainly than have you find it elsewhere. We know what the inspectors raised with us, we are working through it, and we will discuss any part of it openly. Please come and see us and ask us the difficult questions.

We are Thomas Fields Care Centre, a residential care home in Buxton, Derbyshire. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities, people with a visual or hearing impairment, and people managing an eating disorder. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we are not going to write around it. We have looked closely at what the inspection found, changed how care is planned, recorded and reviewed, and strengthened the training and supervision of our staff. Our progress is being monitored, and we tell families and commissioners the same things we tell the regulator. That is a wide range of needs under one roof, and it only works if we plan around individuals rather than running one routine for everyone. Somebody who wants a busy, sociable day and somebody who needs quiet and a predictable rhythm can both live well here, provided we pay proper attention to who needs what. If you are considering us for someone, please come and see the home and ask about the rating directly. We will answer fully rather than reassuringly.

- Care Home
Argyle Residential Home is in Buxton. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support some younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. We aim for an ordinary, comfortable household. Residents get up when they wake, eat what they actually enjoy and spend their days as they choose. Some are sociable and are downstairs from breakfast onwards. Others would rather have their own room and quiet. Both are perfectly reasonable. People usually arrive having struggled at home for a while, and the first few weeks are about settling rather than fitting in. We learn routines rather than imposing them, and we encourage people to bring their own furniture and pictures so a room becomes theirs quickly. Dementia care here rests on familiar staff, a steady rhythm and knowing something of a person's earlier life. Where somebody is distressed, we look for the cause. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather be upfront about that than leave you to find it elsewhere. We know which areas were raised, there is work under way, and we are happy to go through any of it. Please come and visit, ask us directly what has changed, and judge the home on what you see.

The Gables is a residential care home in Buxton. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with a learning disability or autism, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. The house sits within reach of the town and we make good use of that. People go out for coffee, to the shops, to church, or simply for a walk in the Derbyshire air when the weather allows. Indoors, the day is built around what people actually want rather than a timetable, and we ask families to tell us about a person's history so that we can keep hold of the things that matter to them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we would rather say that plainly than have anyone find out later. We have worked through the areas identified, in particular how we record and review care and how we support staff to do things consistently, and we are happy to talk through the detail with anyone who asks. We are a small enough home that people know one another, and that makes it easier to notice when someone is unhappy or unwell. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour. If you are looking at care in Buxton and would like an honest conversation about where we are, please call and come and see us.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Buxton
The homes registered to provide it
Moore Care (Registered) Limited on Manchester Road, Argyle Residential Home, Thomas Fields Care Centre and The Gables Care Home are the four providers gathered on this page, each registered as a residential care home rather than a nursing home. That distinction shapes what they can offer. Residential dementia care covers personal care, supervision and the structure of daily life, delivered by care staff, with community nurses and a GP visiting when clinical input is called for.
Reading the inspection picture
All four homes currently hold a Requires Improvement rating from the Care Quality Commission. A shared rating is a reason to read closely rather than to rule anywhere out, because inspectors apply it to findings that range from record keeping and staffing arrangements through to matters that touch directly on daily life, and only the report itself sets out which applied. Ask each manager what has changed since the visit and what evidence they can put in front of you.
What to weigh up when you visit
Dementia care is judged best in person. Notice how staff respond to someone distressed or repeating a question, whether residents are occupied rather than sitting in silence, and how freely people can move about safely. Worth asking about: staffing overnight, how the home supports residents who walk with purpose, and what dementia training the team has completed.
Choosing between dementia care homes in Buxton
Beginning with a care needs assessment
A care needs assessment is the usual first formal step, and it costs nothing to request. Derbyshire County Council Adult Social Care is responsible for carrying that assessment out, for setting down the level of support a person needs, and for deciding what it will fund towards meeting it. A financial assessment runs alongside, looking at income, savings and property to establish who contributes what. Many families request the assessment while they are still visiting homes, so the two strands move together.
What a placement is likely to cost
Weekly fees for residential dementia care differ from home to home and rise with the level of support someone needs, and each home sets its own rates. Where the council funds part of a placement it will pay up to its own usual rate, and a third party may be asked to meet the difference if the family prefers a home that charges more. Anyone paying privately should ask for a written fee schedule from each home, showing what the weekly figure includes, what sits outside it as an extra, and how often fees are reviewed.
Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Buxton
How many dementia care homes are there in Buxton?
Buxton has 4 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 9 CQC registered care homes in Buxton: 4 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
Which dementia care homes in Buxton were inspected most recently?
The Gables Care Home (23 March 2026), Moore Care (Registered) Limited, 4 Manchester Road (24 November 2023) and Argyle Residential Home (17 March 2023) have the most recent CQC reports.
Which providers offer dementia care in Buxton?
Four residential care homes are listed for dementia care in Buxton: Moore Care (Registered) Limited on Manchester Road, Argyle Residential Home, Thomas Fields Care Centre and The Gables Care Home. All four are registered with the Care Quality Commission as residential care homes. Each profile on this page sets out the registration details and the most recent inspection outcome. Comparing them side by side is the quickest way to narrow the list.
What should I ask when I visit a dementia care home in Buxton?
Ask how many staff are on duty overnight as well as during the day, and how many of them have completed dementia training. Ask how the home supports someone who becomes distressed or who walks with purpose, and what happens when needs increase. It is worth asking what a typical day looks like and how families are kept informed. Where a home has been rated Requires Improvement, ask the manager directly what has changed since the inspection.
What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?
A dementia care home provides personal care, supervision and daily support from care staff, with community health professionals visiting when they are needed. A dementia nursing home also has registered nurses on site around the clock, which suits people with ongoing medical needs alongside their dementia. Every provider on this page is registered as a residential care home rather than a nursing home. If nursing input becomes necessary later, a fresh assessment can look at whether a move is appropriate.
Can Derbyshire County Council pay for a dementia care home placement?
It can contribute where the care needs assessment shows that residential care is the right form of support. A financial assessment then considers income, savings and any property to work out how much a person pays themselves and how much the council meets. Where the council contributes, it pays up to its own usual rate for that type of care. If the family chooses a home charging above that rate, a third party may be asked to make up the difference.
How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Buxton?
Contact Derbyshire County Council and request an assessment of adult social care needs, which anyone who appears to need support can ask for. A social worker or assessor will look at daily living, safety at home, memory and the support already in place. The assessment is free, and it produces the record that decisions about funded support rest on. A request can be made by the person themselves, by a relative or by a GP on their behalf.
How far ahead should we start looking for a dementia care home?
Starting early gives you room to visit more than once and to see a home at different times of day. Several weeks is a reasonable expectation, since assessments, financial checks and the wait for a suitable vacancy all take time. Where a move follows a hospital stay the timescale can be far shorter, which makes any groundwork done beforehand valuable. Even a provisional shortlist eases the pressure when a decision has to be made quickly.
