- Care Home
Eboracum House is a residential care home in Barnsley supporting older people, including those living with dementia. Younger adults whose needs are best met in a residential setting are welcome too, and we offer respite stays. The weeks after a move matter more than anything that follows, so that is where we put our attention. We want to know what somebody did for a living, who is important to them, what they like to eat, when they prefer to wake, what unsettles them and what puts it right again. None of that comes off an assessment form. It comes from sitting down with a person and their family and actually asking. Dementia care here runs on constants. Familiar faces, a predictable shape to the day, meals at the times the body expects, and music and food from the right part of a life. We do not hurry and we do not correct. We look for what somebody can still do and build around it rather than keeping a tally of what has been lost. Respite stays give a family carer a break that is genuinely a break, with proper support in place. Visitors are welcome. Please come on an ordinary day and see the home as it really is.

Here at Firs Residential Home in Barnsley, we provide residential care for a range of people including older adults, younger adults living with physical disabilities, and those affected by dementia. We also offer respite care for people who need short term support, giving families and carers a chance to rest while knowing their loved ones are well looked after. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that responsibility lightly. Our aim is to make sure each person who comes through our doors feels at home, respected, and genuinely listened to. We take time to get to know the people we support, learning about their routines, preferences, and the things that matter most to them, so that care can be shaped around the individual rather than the other way around. Our team works hard every day to provide consistent, attentive care in a warm and comfortable environment. We know that trust is built through actions rather than words, and we are committed to being open and honest with residents and their families at all times. We are aware that our most recent CQC rating reflects areas where we need to do better, and we want to be straightforward about that. We have taken the findings seriously and have been working through the necessary improvements with a real focus on making meaningful changes rather than simply ticking boxes. We welcome feedback from residents, families, and external bodies because we believe it helps us grow and improve the care we provide. If you would like to find out more about life at Firs Residential Home or arrange a visit, we would be very happy to hear from you. We are always glad to show people around and answer any questions they might have.

Shaftsbury House is a care home in Barnsley. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, and we support people living with dementia, adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability and people managing a mental health condition. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Supporting that range of people under one roof works only if nobody is treated as a category. What a younger autistic adult wants from a week bears almost no relation to what an older person living with dementia needs from it, and planning that lumps them together fails both. So we sit down with each person, work out what their week should actually contain, and arrange staffing around that rather than the reverse. Residents decide how their own day runs, keep their own things around them and see visitors when it suits them. Where somebody has lived with a mental health condition for years, we start from what they tell us works. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit if you are considering care in Barnsley.

Riverside Care Home is in Barnsley. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with sight or hearing loss, and we offer respite and short stays. We try to run a household rather than an institution. Residents bring their own furniture and pictures, keep the routines they have always kept and decide how much they want to be part of what is going on. Some want company from breakfast onwards, others want the paper and their own room, and both are entirely reasonable. When somebody moves in we take time over their history and preferences and we write it down so that every member of staff knows it. Dementia support here rests on familiarity and pace, so we keep staffing as consistent as we can, avoid unnecessary change and work out what settles a particular resident. Where sight or hearing is failing we pay attention to lighting, contrast, signage and sound, and we check that glasses and hearing aids are actually being used and looked after, which is more often the problem than people expect. For residents with physical disabilities we look at equipment and at how the building is arranged so that independence is protected where it can be. Meals are cooked on the premises and residents have a real say in the menu. Visitors are welcome through the day. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and look round whenever suits you.

- Care Home
Ward Green Lodge is a residential care home in Barnsley. We support older people who need help with daily life, including many living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and younger adults who need residential care. We also offer respite stays for short periods. Most of the people who live here come from Barnsley and the villages around it, and that shared background does real work. Familiar names, familiar places and the same plain speaking give people something to hold on to, and a proper conversation over a brew is worth more than most things on a timetable. Residents run their own days. When to get up and go to bed, what to eat, whether to sit with others or keep to their own room with their own things around them. Rooms hold people's own furniture and photographs, and nobody comes in without knocking. For residents living with dementia, consistency is what helps most, so we keep staffing settled and learn each person's history properly, which lets us make sense of what they are telling us instead of managing the surface of it. Where somebody has a physical disability, we work around what they can do rather than taking over. Health needs are managed alongside local GPs and community nurses, and families hear from us early when anything changes. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and visit us in Barnsley.

Hunningley Grange Residential Home is in Barnsley, and we provide residential care for older people, along with younger adults whose needs are best met in a home of this kind. A good deal of our work is with people living with dementia. We keep the day calm and unhurried, we keep surroundings familiar, and we take the time to learn about somebody's life before they came to us, because knowing who a person has been tells us a great deal about how to support them now. Families are a big part of that, and we ask them to tell us the small things as well as the medical ones. People who live here choose how their day goes. Some like company and whatever is happening in the lounge, others prefer their own room and their own company, and both are perfectly fine. Visitors are welcome and we would rather relatives felt able to call in than felt they needed an appointment. We also offer respite stays, which give family carers a planned break and support people who are not quite ready to go home after a spell in hospital. We want to be straight with you. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We have an improvement plan in place and we are working through it with our staff, residents and families. Please come and see the home, and ask us about it directly.

Rosehill House Residential Home is a residential care home in Barnsley, providing a permanent home and short stays for adults who need support with everyday living. We care for older people and for younger adults. Some of those living here need help with personal care, mobility or medication. Many are living with dementia, and for them we keep the surroundings calm and familiar, give people time to respond, and learn enough about their lives to be proper company rather than simply efficient. Families tell us plenty about a person before they arrive, and that knowledge does more good than anything else we could put in place. Respite stays are available, whether a family carer needs a planned break or somebody needs looking after for a few weeks after being unwell. We would rather be open with you about our regulator. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not satisfied with that. We have taken it seriously, there is work under way to put things right, and we are willing to go through it in detail with anyone considering the home. Choosing a care home is hard, and it is usually decided under pressure. Please come and see Rosehill House for yourself. We are Ivy Mead, a residential care home in Barnsley. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities or autism, people living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available too. That is a wide range of needs living under one roof, and it only works if we plan properly. Somebody who wants a sociable, busy day and somebody who needs quiet and an entirely predictable routine can both live well here, provided we pay attention to who needs what. So we ask, we observe, and we adapt rather than running everyone to the same timetable. The help itself covers personal care, medication, meals and mobility, and we are just as concerned with supporting what people can still do themselves. Independence lost unnecessarily is very hard to get back. Families and friends are welcome at any reasonable hour. We keep relatives informed about changes rather than waiting to be asked, and if something has gone wrong we say so and explain what we have done about it. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The only real way to judge a home is to visit one, so please ring us and come at a normal, busy time of day.

Autumn House is a residential care home in Barnsley. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with sight or hearing loss. The house runs at a domestic pace. Help with washing, dressing, mobility and medication is given discreetly and when it suits the person rather than when it suits a rota. Before somebody moves in we spend time learning how they have always run their day, and those preferences are written down so that nobody has to keep explaining themselves. For people living with dementia we keep the day steady and the faces familiar, and we ask families to tell us about the life behind the person, using what we learn in conversation and to settle somebody who is anxious. Where sight or hearing loss is part of the picture, we adjust how we communicate and make sure the house is easy to find your way around. Meals are cooked on the premises and mealtimes stay sociable and unhurried. Visitors are welcome whenever they want to come, and we would far rather hear a small worry early than a large one later. Short respite stays are available, often to give a carer at home a proper rest or to help somebody get their confidence back after a spell in hospital. Please come and see us on an ordinary day.

Lindhurst Lodge Residential Home is in Barnsley, providing residential care for older people who need support close at hand. We aim to run as a household rather than an institution, with the day shaped by the people living it. Supporting residents living with dementia is a substantial part of our work. We approach it by learning who each person is, keeping routines familiar and the day unhurried, explaining changes before they happen, and looking for the cause when somebody is unsettled rather than treating it as behaviour to be contained. Our team helps with personal care, medication, mobility and meals, and equally with the things that make a day worth having: conversation, company, fresh air and music for those who want them. Rooms are personalised and relatives are welcome whenever they can come. Respite stays are available for shorter periods. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Requires Improvement. We would rather put that in front of you now than leave you to find it. Field View Care Home is a residential care home in Barnsley, caring for older people who can no longer manage safely on their own. We aim for the feel of a household rather than an institution, with people keeping their own routines, their own belongings and a genuine say in how their day goes. We support people living with dementia, and that work depends on continuity above all. Knowing what somebody's day used to look like, keeping as much of it as we can and understanding what sits behind distress rather than simply managing it is what makes the difference between a settled day and a difficult one. We also care for people living with a physical disability, where good support is largely about practical independence and dignity rather than doing everything for somebody. Respite stays are available too, for people who need care for a short period after illness and for family carers who need a proper break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We take that as the standard to hold rather than an achievement to rest on. The better test is the everyday evidence, whether people are up and occupied, whether mealtimes are sociable and whether relatives feel able to raise a concern early. Please come and see for yourself.

Chapel View Care Home is a residential care home in Barnsley. We are home to older people who need support with everyday life, including residents living with dementia and residents with physical disabilities, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose family carer needs a break. We think of this as somewhere people live, not somewhere care is delivered to them, and we try to make that difference obvious in how the house runs. Residents tell us when they like to get up, what they want to eat, how much help they want and where they prefer to spend the day. Support with personal care, meals, medication and appointments is given quietly and with proper regard for privacy. Dementia care shapes much of our work. Knowing a person's history, the people and places that matter to them and the rhythms that suit them is what allows us to reassure someone who is anxious instead of arguing with them. We keep the day familiar and explain changes in advance wherever we can. For residents with physical disabilities we pay close attention to mobility and to the arrangements that let someone do more for themselves. Families are welcome whenever they want to come and we would far rather hear a worry while it is small. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Deangate Care Home is in Barnsley. We provide residential care for older people and for younger adults who need support with everyday life, including people living with dementia, adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. What sits behind that is not remarkable so much as steady: staff who stay long enough to know the people they look after, time allowed to do things properly, and a willingness to say plainly when something is not right so that it can be put right. What we offer is residential rather than nursing care. Staff are on duty day and night to help with personal care, dressing, medication and meals, while doctors and district nurses come in for clinical needs. For most people that is the right level of support and it leaves far more of their independence intact. For residents living with dementia we keep the day in a familiar order, keep the staff group as steady as we can and take time to learn about the person's earlier life. For autistic residents we pay attention to predictable routine, clear information and honest notice before anything changes. Respite and short stays are available. Please ring if you would like to look round Deangate.

Mapplewell Manor is a residential care home in Barnsley providing a home for older people and for younger adults who need support with everyday life, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We mention it early because it reflects a set of fairly unremarkable commitments rather than anything clever. Staff who stay with us for years, so that people are cared for by faces they know well. Days that belong to the person living them. Food that people actually want to eat. Families treated as part of the household and able to say when something is not right. The care covers help with washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked on the premises, support with mobility and the many small things that become difficult alone. For people living with dementia we keep routines steady and surroundings easy to understand. For people with sensory loss we adjust how we communicate, how rooms are lit and how we approach somebody, because those small changes decide whether a person feels included. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. An outstanding rating is a standard to keep rather than a prize to display, and you are very welcome to come and see the home.

Prospect House is a residential care home in Barnsley. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for families who need a planned break. The essentials come first. Decent meals, comfortable rooms, help without delay, laundry that returns, and nobody pushed into activities. We spend time on this deliberately. Knowing that a resident spent forty years on the railways, or hated school, or still worries about her sister, changes how we look after her. For residents living with dementia we protect the routine and keep the surroundings familiar, and we ask families for the history that lets us understand what somebody means rather than only what they said. Couples and close friendships are supported rather than managed. People's relationships do not stop mattering when they move into a care home. We ask people what a good day would look like for them, and then we try to arrange more of those and fewer of the other kind. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. It is recognition we value, and a standard we continue to build upon. Choosing a care home for someone you love is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the questions, hopes, and concerns that come with it. If you are considering residential or dementia care in Barnsley, we would be delighted to welcome you to Oakwood Grange, answer your questions, and help you feel confident that your loved one will be cared for with the compassion they deserve.

Belle Green Court is a residential care home in Barnsley, providing care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia. We also offer respite stays. We run the home as a household. People get up when they wake, sit where they choose, eat what they enjoy and keep the habits of a lifetime. Help with washing, dressing, medication and getting about is given when it is needed, quietly and without taking over. Dementia care here depends on knowledge and patience rather than on any particular technique. Our team learns each resident's history, their family and their working life, and uses that every day. When somebody is anxious or unsettled there is usually a reason behind it, and looking for the reason is far more useful than smoothing it over. Relatives are part of the home. They visit when it suits them, and we keep in contact about health and mood rather than only ringing when something has gone wrong. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are looking at residential care in Barnsley for yourself or for someone in your family, please arrange to come in, meet the team and see the place on an ordinary afternoon.

Hoyland Hall Residential Home is in Barnsley. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability and younger adults. Respite stays are available too. Supporting a mixed group under one roof means we cannot run the home to a single pattern, and we do not try. What we aim for is a place where people are taken as they come and where support is built around the individual. Some residents want a very structured day. Others want the opposite, plenty of freedom and somewhere steady to come back to. Where someone has a physical disability we pay attention to equipment, access and the amount of help we offer. For residents with a learning disability or who are autistic, the environment itself is part of the support, from noise and lighting to how predictable the day is. With dementia, familiar faces and a steady rhythm do most of the work, and we treat distress as something with a cause. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to talk around that. We know which areas were raised, work is in hand, and we would rather discuss it openly with anyone considering Hoyland Hall. Please visit and ask us directly what has changed.

St James Court Care Home provides residential care in Barnsley for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with mental health needs. We also take planned respite stays. Our aim is that people carry on being themselves here, with the help they need arranged quietly around them. Residents choose when to get up, what to wear, where to sit and who to spend time with, and our staff know those preferences well enough not to have to ask twice. Practically we help with personal care, medicines, meals and all the business of running the place. For residents living with dementia we keep the day familiar and the pace gentle, because rushing somebody creates distress that takes far longer to settle than the time it saves. We work with what a person can still do rather than treating the diagnosis as the whole story. For residents with mental health needs, consistency and a lack of fuss count for a great deal, along with staff who notice early when somebody is less well than they were. Respite stays give family carers a genuine break and let people see what we are like before making a longer decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives what they think, and we act on the answers.

We at Royal Court Care Home are proud to offer a welcoming residential care home in the heart of Barnsley, where compassionate support, dignity, and everyday comfort come together for every person who calls our home their own. Set within the familiar surroundings of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, our home benefits from a location that keeps residents connected to the community they know and love. Families visiting from across the borough and the wider Yorkshire and Humberside region will find us easy to reach, and our setting provides a calm, homely atmosphere where residents can feel truly settled. From comfortable communal spaces where friendships blossom over a cup of tea, to quieter corners for reflection or a chat with loved ones, we have shaped our environment to feel less like an institution and far more like home. Our care offering is broad and thoughtfully considered. We specialise in older person residential care, dementia care, support for adults with physical disabilities, and care for younger adults whose needs may not be met in more traditional settings. We also welcome respite guests, whether someone needs a short stay to recover after a hospital admission, or a family carer requires trusted support while they take a well earned break. In practice, this means our team takes time to understand each resident as an individual, learning their history, preferences, routines, and the small details that bring comfort throughout the day. For families living with a dementia diagnosis, we aim to provide reassurance that their loved one is being supported with patience, kindness, and a genuine understanding of how dementia can affect daily life. Our approach is built around choice and independence. Residents are encouraged to shape their own day, whether that means joining in with group activities, spending time with visitors, enjoying a favourite meal, or simply having the space to relax. For younger adults and those living with a physical disability, we work closely with each person to promote autonomy and to support goals that matter to them personally. We are pleased to hold an overall Good rating from the Care Quality Commission following our most recent inspection in September 2024, with Good ratings awarded across every one of the five key areas assessed: safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well led. For families weighing up the difficult decision of arranging care for a relative, we hope this independent recognition offers meaningful reassurance. It reflects the everyday commitment of our team to keep residents safe, to deliver effective support grounded in best practice, to lead with kindness, to respond to changing needs, and to run the home with clear, considered leadership. Choosing a care home is rarely an easy step, and we understand the weight of that decision. If you are exploring options for yourself or a loved one in Barnsley or the surrounding area, we warmly invite you to get in touch with Royal Court Care Home. Whether you have questions, would like to arrange a visit, or simply want to talk through what residential care might look like, our door is open and we are here to help you feel confident about the next step.

Parkside Care Home is a care home in Barnsley. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, and we support people living with dementia and people managing a mental health condition. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Something worth saying plainly is how we handle complaints, because it reveals more about a home than any description of its facilities. Families often hold back from raising something small in case it makes things awkward for their relative, and that hesitation is exactly how minor problems turn into serious ones. So we ask relatives directly and regularly whether anything is wrong, and we would far rather deal with a grumble about the laundry this week than a letter of complaint in six months. Beyond that, the day belongs to the residents. People get up when they want, spend their time where they choose and see visitors when it suits them. Rooms belong to the people in them. Where somebody has lived with a mental health condition for years, we begin from what they tell us works. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see us if you are considering care in Barnsley.

Valley Park Care Home is a residential care home in Barnsley. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with mental health needs, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Our approach is simple enough to state and takes real effort to keep. The home belongs to the people who live in it. They decide when to get up, where to sit, who to spend time with and how much to join in. Personal care is given unhurriedly and privately. Nobody is moved along to suit a rota. For people living with dementia, familiarity is the most useful thing we can offer. Consistent staff who know a person's history, a steady rhythm to the day and time taken to explain what is happening prevent far more distress than any response afterwards. We ask families to tell us about the person they knew before, because that knowledge helps us understand what we see now. Relatives are welcome whenever it suits them, and we would much rather hear a worry early. We will tell you honestly what we are doing about it. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Mapleton Court Care Home is a residential care home in Barnsley. We support adults who need residential care, from older people living with dementia to younger adults with a physical disability or a mental health condition, and we try to run the place as somewhere people live rather than somewhere they are placed. Our team helps with personal care, medication, meals and getting about safely. Beyond that, most of our attention goes on the texture of an ordinary day. Whether someone can get up when they want, eat something they actually fancy, have company when they want it and be left alone when they do not, and carry on doing the things they can still do for themselves. Because we support quite a range of people, we do not run a single routine and expect everyone to fit it. A younger adult rebuilding independence needs something different from someone in the later stages of dementia, and both are entitled to have that recognised. Respite stays are available for families who need a planned break, in surroundings their relative can settle into quickly. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Relatives are welcome here and we would always rather hear a concern early. If you are looking at homes in South Yorkshire, please arrange to visit.

The Old Chapel Care Home is a residential care home in Barnsley. We support older adults, including many people living with dementia, people living with a physical disability, and people with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our aim is a home that is easy to live in. That means surroundings which are calm and simple to make sense of, a day with a reliable shape to it, and staff who know each person well enough to spot when something is not right before it is said out loud. Where somebody has difficulty seeing or hearing, we adapt how we communicate and we keep things where that person expects to find them, which prevents a great deal of avoidable frustration. Help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and appointments is there for anybody who needs it, given without fuss and without taking over. People keep their own belongings, decide how sociable they want to be, and have visitors when it suits them rather than when it suits us. We work closely with families, both because they want to know how their relative is and because what they can tell us about a person's life is what lets us care for them properly. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. You are welcome to visit and see the home for yourself.

Thornhill House is a residential care home in Barnsley. We support older people, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities, including younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays. Supporting that range of people well means being specific rather than general. For an older resident, including somebody living with dementia, it may mean unhurried help with personal care, a recognisable daily pattern and the same familiar staff around. For an adult with a learning disability or an autistic adult it may mean a predictable routine, clear information given in good time, and support to manage money, appointments and getting out to a job or a course. Where physical disability is part of the picture we think carefully about equipment, seating, transfers and access, because those details decide how much independence somebody actually has. We pay close attention to how each person communicates, and we record what we learn so that it survives a change of staff. Every plan is written with the individual and reviewed properly. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to visit and see how the house runs.

Our older person and residential care focuses on supporting daily living with dignity, allowing residents to maintain their independence wherever possible whilst knowing that gentle, attentive support is always at hand. For those living with dementia, our team takes time to understand each person's history, preferences, and routines, creating a calm and reassuring environment that helps reduce anxiety and foster moments of genuine connection. Our mental health support is delivered with patience, respect, and a person centred approach, recognising that recovery and wellbeing look different for everyone. We also welcome younger adults whose care needs are best met in a supportive residential setting, ensuring they feel valued, heard, and engaged in life at the home. What this means in practice for families is peace of mind. It means knowing your loved one is being cared for by a team who takes the time to listen, who notices the small things, and who treats every resident with the warmth and respect they deserve. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we are committed to walking alongside you every step of the way. Our most recent CQC inspection in December 2022 rated us as Good overall, with Good ratings across the Safe, Effective, Caring, and Responsive domains. The Well-led domain was rated as Requires Improvement, and we view this as a meaningful opportunity to keep strengthening our leadership and governance so that every aspect of life at Bollingbroke House reflects the standard of care our residents and their families deserve. Continuous improvement is something we take seriously, and we are dedicated to building on the strong foundations our inspection has recognised. If you are exploring care options for someone you love, we warmly invite you to get in touch with us at Bollingbroke House. We would be delighted to answer your questions, share more about life in our home, and arrange a visit so you can experience the atmosphere for yourself. Sid Bailey Care Home is a residential home near Barnsley for older people, including those living with dementia and residents with a physical disability. We also support some younger adults whose needs suit a home of this kind. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and whatever else has become difficult, and we leave people in charge of the rest. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they spend the day, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet afternoon on their own. For residents living with dementia we keep the house familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and take time to work out what lies behind a change in mood rather than treating it as a symptom. Where somebody has a physical disability the right equipment is in place and staff are trained to help with moving safely and comfortably, without fuss and without taking over. Meals are cooked here and we ask people what they actually want to eat. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable time. Respite stays are available for family carers needing a break or for somebody regaining strength after illness. Please ring us if you would like to come and look round properly.

Burntwood Hall Care Centre is a residential care home in Barnsley providing a home for older people and for younger adults who need support with daily living, including people living with dementia. We offer permanent places and shorter respite stays. We run the home at the pace of the people in it. Breakfast happens when somebody wakes rather than when a trolley comes round, and the day takes the shape a person wants. The care covers help with washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked here, support with mobility, and somebody always around when a person needs them. For those living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the faces familiar, and we arrange the house so that it is easy to understand and to move about in. Our staff tend to stay with us, and that continuity does more to settle somebody than any particular method could. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come, and we would much rather hear a concern early than have it sit unspoken. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Barnsley
Dementia asks something particular of a care home. The test is not only whether staff are kind, but whether the building, the routine and the training hold up when someone is frightened, awake at three in the morning or convinced they must get to work. Twenty nine homes is a small enough field to examine carefully.
Where the published grades sit
Three of these homes have been rated Outstanding and eighteen Good, so the greater part of this list has met or exceeded what the regulator expects. Six carry Requires Improvement and two await a first published rating. A Requires Improvement grade is a reason to read the report rather than to cross a home off, because the substance varies enormously: a records failing is not the same as a safety failing, and a provider may have acted decisively since. Check the inspection date as well as the word.
How the building supports the person
Ask to see how someone finds their way around: whether doors and handrails contrast with the walls, whether there is daylight and a safe place to walk, and whether bedrooms can be made to look like a person's own. Ask what happens when restlessness builds in the late afternoon, and what the home tries before medication is ever discussed. Ask whether mealtimes, bedtimes and bathing follow the resident's lifelong habits or the staff rota.
Training, staffing and knowing people
Ask what dementia training the carers have completed, who provides it and how frequently it is repeated. Ask how many staff cover the night shift and how the home supports someone who becomes distressed then. Ask how long the present team has worked there, because familiar faces do more for a person with dementia than almost any other single factor. A settled staff group is a genuine quality signal.
Choosing between dementia care homes in Barnsley
Asking for an assessment
An assessment of care and support needs is free and available to anyone who appears to need help, regardless of savings. It should record what the person can still manage, where support is needed and how memory and understanding affect daily life, and it should involve the person themselves as far as possible. Arrange it through Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council adult social care, and ask for a carer's assessment of your own if you have been providing the support so far. The written outcome is what any funding decision will rest on.
Working out who pays
A financial assessment then sets capital and income against national thresholds. Above the upper threshold the placement is self funded. Below it the council contributes on a sliding scale while the resident pays a share from income and keeps a protected personal allowance. Where health needs are substantial, continuing healthcare funding from the National Health Service may apply instead, and it is reasonable to ask for that to be considered. Ask for every calculation on paper.
What the weekly figure includes
Fees differ between homes and between rooms within a home, and places offering higher staffing for dementia support often sit towards the top of the local range. Ask for a written breakdown of what is covered and what is charged on top, such as hairdressing, chiropody or escorted appointments. Ask how fee reviews work and what happens if needs increase. Only then can two homes be compared fairly.
Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Barnsley
How many dementia care homes are there in Barnsley?
Barnsley has 29 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 55 CQC registered care homes in Barnsley: 3 Outstanding, 18 Good, 6 Requires improvement, 2 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
Which dementia care homes in Barnsley were inspected most recently?
Parkside Care Home (30 August 2026), Hoyland Hall Residential Home (8 April 2026) and Riverside Care Home (2 April 2026) have the most recent CQC reports.
Which providers in Barnsley offer dementia care?
Twenty nine care homes in Barnsley registered to support people living with dementia are listed in this collection. Every one has a profile on Care Assura setting out its published rating and linking through to the inspection report. All are registered with the Care Quality Commission, the regulator for adult social care in England. Sorting by grade and by distance from family is normally the quickest way to arrive at a shortlist worth contacting.
How does a dementia care home differ from a dementia nursing home?
A dementia care home provides accommodation and personal care with staff trained in supporting memory loss and the changes in behaviour that can accompany it. A dementia nursing home offers all of that alongside registered nurses on duty at every hour, so clinical care happens on site. The difference is written into each provider's registration and governs who may be admitted. Where there are swallowing difficulties, complex medication or advanced frailty, a nursing registered home is usually the more suitable option.
What is worth asking when visiting a dementia care home in Barnsley?
Ask what dementia specific training staff receive and how regularly it is refreshed, and how many carers are on duty overnight. Ask what the home does when a resident is distressed or determined to leave, and what alternatives are tried before medication is considered. Ask whether familiar belongings can come along and whether personal routines are respected. Ask too how families are kept informed and what happened the last time somebody raised a concern.
How is a care needs assessment arranged in Barnsley?
Contact Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and request an adult social care needs assessment. It can be asked for by the person themselves, by a relative or friend acting for them, or by a GP, memory service or hospital team. There is no charge and no savings test to qualify for one. The written outcome describes the support required and becomes the basis both for choosing a home and for any funding that follows.
Can Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council fund a dementia care home placement?
It can, where the needs assessment shows residential dementia care is required and the financial assessment shows capital below the national upper threshold. Any support is calculated on a sliding scale and the resident normally contributes from income as well. Where health needs are significant, National Health Service continuing healthcare funding may apply instead and should be considered. Ask for the calculations in writing so that they can be checked and questioned if necessary.
When should a family start looking at dementia care homes?
Sooner than feels comfortable, because the best regarded dementia homes hold waiting lists and an emergency leaves almost no choice. Beginning early also lets the person visit and give a view while they are still able to weigh one place against another. A steady sequence is to request the assessment, shortlist a few homes and visit each more than once. If a hospital discharge sets the timetable, a temporary placement can buy the time to choose without pressure.
