- Care Home
We are a residential care home in Altrincham, providing a home for older people who need help with daily life, including those living with dementia. Our aim is an unhurried house. A good deal of care goes wrong simply because it is rushed, so we try to give people the time to wash, dress and eat at their own pace, and to sit with someone who wants to talk rather than moving straight on to the next task. Residents keep their own routines and belongings as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to join in with what is happening. Dementia care, as we have come to understand it, is mostly a matter of knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith, old habits and small dislikes, because that knowledge is what allows a member of staff to reassure someone who is frightened or cannot place where they are. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places. A planned break can be the thing that allows a relative to keep providing care at home for longer. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Families are welcome to visit whenever they wish, and we would far rather hear about a problem early than find out about it late. Do come and see the home for yourself before deciding anything.

- Care Home
We are a residential care home in Altrincham, supporting older people and younger adults who need help with daily life. That includes people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We also take respite bookings for shorter stays. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of it, while being aware that a rating describes what inspectors found on particular days and that the job is to keep deserving it. What sits behind it is fairly unglamorous. Knowing the people who live here properly. Noticing changes early and acting on them. Keeping our staff long enough that they really know everybody, because a team that stays is the biggest single advantage a care home can have. Beyond that, we want the days here to be worth having rather than merely safe. People get up when they are ready, eat what they actually want and spend their time as they prefer. Some want company and something going on, others would rather sit quietly, and neither needs explaining to us. For people living with dementia the steadiness of the day does much of the work. Familiar faces, an unhurried pace and staff who can read what somebody means when the words are hard to find. Families are welcome here and we would always rather you came and saw the place. Please contact us and we will arrange a visit.

- Care Home
Norwood Drive is a residential care home in Altrincham. We support older people needing help with daily living, including those living with dementia, adults who have a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability and people whose sight or hearing is impaired. We also support some younger adults. That is a wide range, and what holds it together is planning around the individual rather than a house routine everybody has to fit. We find out how somebody wants their day to run, what tends to help when things are difficult and who we should contact, and we treat that knowledge as the substance of the care. For residents living with dementia we keep routines steady and faces familiar. Where sight or hearing is impaired we keep belongings where they are expected and check we have been understood. Where somebody needs help to move, we take the time that doing it safely and comfortably requires. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Families in Trafford are welcome to visit. Please contact us to arrange a time.

- Care Home
Fairfield Care in Altrincham is a residential care home supporting older people and younger adults. Our experience covers dementia, learning disabilities and autism, and mental health needs, and we also offer respite stays. With that range of people we build round individuals rather than running one routine and expecting everybody to fit it. Before anyone moves in we spend time with them and whoever they want involved, learning how they like their days to go, what they manage perfectly well themselves, where help would be welcome and what they would rather we left alone. That becomes the plan, and it is theirs to change. Help with personal care, medication and health appointments is given as the person has asked and written down precisely, so that the same thing happens whoever is on shift. Consistency is what allows people to relax, and it matters especially for anyone who finds change difficult. Where somebody communicates in their own way we learn it and record it. With dementia we lean on knowing a person well, gathering their history with their family and keeping it current. Where somebody is managing a mental health condition we aim to be steady and clear rather than unpredictable. Meals are cooked here with real choice. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated the home good overall, and visitors are welcome.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Altrincham
Requesting a care needs assessment
The practical starting point is a written account of what the person needs, produced by a care needs assessment. It is free, carries no means test and can be requested by the person or by a relative acting on their behalf. Assessment and funded support in this area are the responsibility of Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council, whose assessor will consider memory, risk, mobility, medication, continence and the load currently falling on family carers. Describe the worst nights rather than the manageable days, because an assessment written from a good week consistently understates what is needed. A relative giving unpaid care can request a separate assessment of their own.
What the fees involve
Dementia placements are priced by the week and differ between homes in Altrincham, so rely only on a figure a home has put in writing. Ask what the rate covers and what is billed on top, since hairdressing, chiropody, outings and certain continence products commonly sit outside it. Where the council contributes after a financial assessment, the rate it pays may be lower than a home's private fee, and the shortfall must be met by a third party top up rather than by the resident. Be aware too that a home holding an Outstanding rating is usually in demand, so ask about the waiting list alongside the price.
Choosing between dementia care homes in Altrincham
Using the Outstanding report as a yardstick
Halecroft Grange holds an Outstanding rating, Oldfield Bank Residential Care Home and Fairfield Care Ltd are rated Good, and Norwood Drive has not yet been rated. Read the Outstanding report first and note what inspectors singled out, whether that was how staff knew residents, how distress was understood or how families were involved. Then judge the others against that rather than against a vague sense of what is normal. For the unrated home, ask when an inspection is expected, how long the registered manager has been in post and whether references or a trial period are available.
Questions that reveal the quality of dementia care
Ask how many staff on each shift have completed dementia specific training and who delivers it, because a module completed once online is not the same as regular supervision. Ask what the home does when a resident becomes agitated towards the end of the afternoon, and weigh whether the answer is about finding the cause or containing the behaviour. Find out how life history is gathered and where staff actually read it. Ask how long the manager has been in post and how much agency cover is used in a month, since familiar faces matter enormously when memory is failing.
Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Altrincham
How many dementia care homes are there in Altrincham?
Altrincham has 4 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 9 CQC registered care homes in Altrincham: 1 Outstanding, 2 Good, 1 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
Which dementia care homes in Altrincham were inspected most recently?
Halecroft Grange (25 August 2023), Oldfield Bank Residential Care Home (19 November 2019) and Fairfield Care Ltd (14 March 2019) have the most recent CQC reports.
Can Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council fund a dementia care home placement?
It may, where the person meets the national eligibility criteria and a financial assessment shows they qualify for support. Care needs are considered first, then capital and income separately, to establish how much of the cost the council will meet. Someone with significant health needs may additionally qualify for continuing healthcare funding through the National Health Service, assessed by a different process. Where a person pays for their own care, the council can still provide advice and information.
How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Altrincham?
Contact the adult social care team at Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council and ask for a care needs assessment, which anyone can request for themselves or on behalf of a relative. It is free and does not depend on income, savings or any previous contact. An assessor will discuss memory, safety, mobility, medication and the help a family already provides, then record the eligible needs in writing. Ask for a carer's assessment in the same conversation if a relative is giving regular unpaid support.
How early should we begin looking for a dementia care home?
Earlier than most families feel ready to, and in this area the reason is concrete, since the most highly rated home is likely to have a waiting list. Starting early also allows the person moving to express a preference while they still can. If a crisis has already arrived, say so plainly when you telephone and ask how soon the home could assess. Ask to join a waiting list even where nothing is free, because positions move faster than families expect.
Which homes in Altrincham provide dementia care?
Four residential care homes match this search, namely Norwood Drive, Oldfield Bank Residential Care Home, Halecroft Grange and Fairfield Care Ltd. One currently holds an Outstanding rating, two are rated Good and one has not yet been rated. Availability changes week by week, so a home listed here may have no vacancy when you make contact. Open each profile for the registration details and the most recent Care Quality Commission report.
What should we ask when visiting a dementia care home in Altrincham?
Ask how many staff on each shift hold dementia specific training and who provides that training. Ask what the home does when a resident becomes distressed late in the day, and judge whether the answer is about understanding the cause or about control. Find out how life history is recorded and how it reaches the staff working each shift. Where a home holds a high rating, ask what it was recognised for and whether the same team remains in place.
What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?
A care home provides personal care, meaning help with washing, dressing, eating, medication and daily routine, delivered by care staff. A nursing home additionally keeps qualified nurses on duty and can manage clinical needs such as complex wounds, feeding tubes, unstable conditions and much end of life care. All of the providers matching this search in Altrincham are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If a hospital or community nursing team has indicated that nursing care is needed, look at nursing provision or ask whether district nurses can visit the home.
