About Shinfield View
Shinfield View is a residential care home near Reading. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and respite stays are part of what we do. We try to run an ordinary household rather than a rota. People wake when they wake, eat when they are hungry, and an afternoon with nothing arranged in it is a perfectly good afternoon. There is a tendency in this sector to mistake activity for quality and we work at avoiding it. Dementia care here depends on knowing the person. We ask relatives early for the working life, the places and the music, because that information is much harder to gather later and it is what still connects when a good deal else has gone. Without it we would be managing a condition rather than keeping company with somebody. Respite guests get the same preparation as anybody else, since a fortnight leaves no room for guesswork. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are pleased with it and conscious that it describes a period rather than a promise. What keeps it true is the ordinary daily attention that earned it, and asking relatives what we have stopped noticing.
