About Duncan House
Duncan House is a residential care home in Reading providing a home for older people, for younger adults, and for adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Having that mix living together works better than people sometimes expect. Support is built around the individual rather than around a category, so one person may need help with almost every part of the day and another very little, and both live here on the same terms. We ask each person what a good day looks like for them, write it down in a form that makes sense to them, and change it when they say so. People here are involved in the running of the house as far as they want to be, from choosing meals to helping with the shopping. We support people to get out to work, college, clubs and family, because a home is a base to go out from rather than a place to be kept in. Communication gets close attention, using speech, signing, symbols or simply the understanding that comes from knowing somebody well over time. Short respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and you are welcome to visit.
