About SummerLodge
We are SummerLodge, a residential care home in Westcliff on Sea. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people living with a mental health condition, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays. With that mix of ages and needs in one home, support has to be planned person by person rather than run to a single routine. We spend real time at the start learning how somebody communicates, what they manage on their own, where they want help and what they would rather nobody did for them, and we revisit it as things change. Communication is where a lot of the work sits. We find out how a person makes themselves understood, use that method consistently, and check we have actually been understood rather than assuming it. Predictability does much of the rest, along with familiar staff and routines we protect rather than ask people to be flexible about. Choice runs through the day as far as it can, with help offered rather than imposed, and families and advocates are involved as much as the person wants. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.
