About Coppice Lodge

Coppice Lodge is a residential care home in Nottingham. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for families needing a planned break. We run this as a household. Residents get up when they wake rather than when a rota would prefer, eat when they are hungry, and are allowed an afternoon with nothing in it. There is a habit in this sector of confusing busyness with quality, and we try to avoid it. A warm, well fed, unhurried day in which somebody was properly spoken to is a good day. Dementia care here rests on knowing people. We ask families for the history, the working life, the places and the music, because those are what still connect when much else has slipped. Without them we would be managing a condition rather than keeping company with a person, and residents can tell the difference. Respite guests are properly looked after rather than merely accommodated. We find out beforehand how somebody likes things done, since a short stay leaves no time to learn it slowly. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. We keep that by attending to small things daily, and we would far rather a relative raised a problem with us this week than mentioned it in a review next month.
