About Holmlea

Holmlea is a small residential care home in Newark, Nottinghamshire. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays for people who need a short break or whose regular carer needs one. The house belongs to the people who live in it, and we try to make that plain from the start. Everyone has their own room and their own belongings, and a say in how things are run. Support is planned with each person, in a form they can use, covering how they like to be supported, what they enjoy, what they find hard and what they want their week to hold. Newark is a manageable size, which helps. People here are known in the shops and around the town, keep up clubs and activities they like, see their families and get out without it being a production. We support all of that rather than reducing it to whatever is simplest for the rota. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they do communicate and make sure every member of the team knows. When someone becomes distressed we look for the cause rather than the quickest way to stop it, and any restriction on a person's freedom is agreed formally, written down and reviewed with a view to reducing it. The Care Quality Commission rated us good overall at our most recent inspection. Families, advocates and professionals are welcome to visit.
