About Birches

Birches is a residential care home in Newark, Nottinghamshire, supporting adults who need help with daily living in a house that feels like a home rather than a service. Much of our work is with adults who have a learning disability or who are autistic, and with younger adults. We take time at the start to get to know the person properly, which means learning how they communicate, what a good day looks like for them, what they find difficult and what they would like to be able to do for themselves. Support plans are written with the person, and with family or an advocate where that is wanted, and they change as people change. Independence runs through the place. If somebody can do something themselves, or could learn to with patient support, our job is to make that possible rather than to take it over. That might be cooking a meal, managing money, using local transport, or getting out to something in Newark that they actually enjoy. We also offer respite stays, giving family carers a planned break while their relative stays somewhere welcoming and properly staffed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are pleased with that, though what we watch more closely is whether the people living here are content with their days. If you would like to visit Birches, please get in touch and we will arrange a time for you to come and look round.
