About Abbey House
Abbey House is a residential care home in Grimsby supporting adults, including younger adults, adults with learning disabilities and autism, and people with physical disabilities. We also offer planned respite stays. Our starting assumption is that the people who live here are adults with their own lives to lead, and that our job is to make those lives possible rather than to manage them. People choose how their days go, keep their own routines and possessions, and are supported to do as much for themselves as they want to. Staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, money and running a household, and with getting out to work, college, activities and the people who matter. Where somebody communicates in their own way, we learn it rather than expecting them to meet us halfway. Where somebody needs the day to be predictable, we keep it predictable and give proper warning of anything that has to change. Where somebody has a physical disability, we work out together how they want to be helped, which is usually quite different from how a textbook would put it. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of that, and we are aware that it describes a particular moment rather than a permanent state, so we keep asking the people who live here and their families whether we are still getting it right.
