About Lancaster and Short Breaks Service
We provide short breaks in Morecambe for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, in a residential house rather than a unit. Short breaks are the whole of what we do, and we think that focus is why we do them well. A stay here might give a family carer a genuine rest, or give someone the chance to spend time away from home in a place they already know, which is often the first step towards something more independent later on. Because people come and go, the temptation would be to run everything to a fixed routine. We resist that. Each person arrives with their own way of doing things, and we plan a stay around them rather than around the house. We arrange visits beforehand wherever we can, so that the building, the staff and the routine are familiar before anybody stays overnight, and we take real trouble to learn how someone communicates, what their sensory needs are and what helps when a day starts to go wrong. Families tell us what they know and we listen properly. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding, and the better measure is whether people want to come back.
