About Fennell Court
Fennell Court is a residential care home in Dewsbury, Kirklees, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults. We also offer respite stays for people who need somewhere for a shorter period. We run this as a home where people live their own lives, not as a place things are done to them. People choose how their rooms look, take part in shopping, cooking and looking after the house, and get out to the things they enjoy in Dewsbury and further afield. Where somebody wants to work, volunteer or study, we treat that as part of the support plan rather than a nice extra. Getting this right depends on detail. How much noise there is in a room. Whether a change of staff or plan needs flagging days in advance. Which way of communicating actually works for a person, whether that is speech, symbols, writing or simply time and patience. We keep the staff team as consistent as we can, because familiarity does more good here than any technique, and we train people to understand what causes distress and how to head it off early. We work closely with families, social workers and health colleagues, and we welcome being challenged when we have read something wrongly. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Visitors are welcome to come and see the house.
