About Clarence House
Clarence House is a residential care home in Dewsbury in Kirklees. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays for people whose usual home is elsewhere. Because the people living here want different things from their week, we plan support one person at a time. What helps an older person feel settled is not what builds confidence in a younger adult with a learning disability, and we would rather do both properly than stretch one routine across everybody. That means paying attention to particulars: how somebody likes to be spoken to, what they can manage themselves and would rather we left alone, what tends to make a difficult day. For our younger residents much of the work is about widening what is possible. Cooking something you actually want. Handling money with confidence. Getting into town on your own. Keeping a course, a job or a friendship going. Progress can be slow and can go backwards, and our part is to keep the chance open without pressure. Understanding how each person communicates is essential, particularly where speech is not the main route. We learn each person's way, record it so that everyone responds the same, and keep checking we have understood. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall, and we keep asking the people living here what should change.
