About Claremont Care Home
Claremont Care Home is a care home in Margate. We provide residential care for older people, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. We aim to be a home in the plain sense of the word. People get up when they want, spend the day as they choose, keep their own things around them and have visitors when it suits rather than when a timetable allows. Staff are here to make that workable and to notice when somebody is not quite themselves. Dementia support is a large part of what we do, and most of it is not complicated. Familiar faces, a day with a recognisable shape, and a team who understand what a person is really asking when they ask the same question for the fifth time. Distress almost always has a reason behind it, and finding the reason is better than managing the behaviour. Being on the coast helps. Fresh air and a change of scene lift people in a way that organised activity often does not, and we get outside whenever the weather is reasonable. Respite gives family carers a real break and lets somebody try the home before deciding about a longer stay. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. - 10 January 2019. The inspection was unannounced.
- 17 places, 16 people were using the service at the time
Safe
Inspectors found that people were protected from abuse. Risks to people's safety were assessed, monitored and managed, and medicines were managed safely. There were enough care staff, background checks were done before new staff started, and steps were taken to prevent and control infection.
Effective
Inspectors found that care was delivered in a way that promoted positive outcomes for people. Staff had the knowledge and skills they needed, including how to reassure people living with dementia if they became distressed. People were supported to eat and drink enough to have a balanced diet and had suitable access to healthcare services.
Caring
Inspectors found that people were treated with kindness, respect and compassion. People were supported to express their views, including having access to lay advocates if necessary. Confidential information was kept private.
Responsive
Inspectors found that people received personalised care that promoted their independence. Information was presented in an accessible way so people could make and review decisions about their care. People were supported to pursue their hobbies and interests, and there were arrangements to resolve complaints and to support people at the end of their life.
Well-led
Inspectors found that the registered manager had promoted an open and inclusive culture to make sure regulatory requirements were met. People who lived at the home, their relatives and staff were actively engaged in developing the service. There were systems to help the service learn and improve, and the registered manager worked with other agencies to support joined-up care.
