About Avalon Residential Home
Avalon Residential Home is a care home in Gloucester for older people who need help with daily living. We support people living with dementia, people with mental health needs, and people with sight or hearing loss, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. We are a house rather than an institution and we work hard to keep it feeling that way. People bring their own furniture and photographs, keep their own hours, choose where to spend the day and get help with washing and dressing at their own pace and as privately as we can manage. Meals are cooked here with real choice, and the kitchen will usually make something particular if somebody fancies it. Sensory loss gets specific attention because it is so often overlooked. Lighting, clear signs, good contrast, hearing aids that are actually checked and working: these decide whether a person can join in a conversation or spends the day at one remove from it. With dementia we rely on knowing somebody well. We gather a person's history with their family when they arrive and keep adding to it, so that staff respond to the person in front of them rather than to a set of symptoms. Families are welcome whenever suits them and we tell them the truth, including when something has gone wrong. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated the home good overall.
