Nursing Homes in Isle Of Wight
Families searching for nursing homes in Isle of Wight are frequently doing so under pressure, with a discharge date already set and a decision expected within days rather than weeks. Isle of Wight Council is the right first call even then, because it carries out the care needs assessment that establishes what level of care is genuinely needed and then determines, once finances have been examined, how much help towards the weekly fee is available. Twelve providers match the search, each registered to deliver nursing care, and the published judgements vary considerably: nine are rated Good by the Care Quality Commission, two have been told they Require Improvement, and one has been judged Inadequate. That range means a summary word settles very little on its own. Set aside an hour for the profiles below, read the inspection findings properly, ask each home what has changed since its last visit from inspectors, and let the answers decide where you go and look.
Sorting Through the Nursing Homes on the Island
How the twelve homes were judged
Good ratings are held by Vecta House, Hazel Lodge, Kite Hill Care Home, Solent Grange Nursing Home, Sandown Nursing Home, Springfield Nursing Home, Inglefield Nursing and Residential Home, Kinloch Tay Residential Care Home and Woodside Hall Nursing Home. Two homes, The Elms Care Home and Highfield House Nursing Home, currently require improvement. Orchard House Care Centre carries an Inadequate rating, the most serious judgement available to inspectors, and a home in that position attracts closer regulatory attention until matters improve. Anyone considering it should read the report line by line and put direct questions to the provider.
What a report reveals that a grade does not
Ratings are assembled from five separate judgements about safety, effectiveness, caring, responsiveness and leadership, and the balance between them differs from home to home. A home rated Good throughout is a different proposition from one that scraped the same word with a weakness in safety. Look at the date of the inspection as well, since staff and managers move on and a report from several years ago describes a team that may no longer exist. Ask what has changed since, and ask for specifics rather than reassurance.
Fitting the home to the person
Ask whether the team has supported someone with the same condition before, how many registered nurses are on duty overnight and at weekends, and what happens when a resident becomes unwell without warning. Ask how quickly relatives are told about a fall or an infection, and who telephones them. Island distances are short but journeys can still be awkward, so ask how the home helps residents stay in touch with family living on the mainland. Visit when the day is in full swing and watch how staff talk with residents who cannot easily reply.
Getting an Assessment and Sorting Out Funding
Asking for a care needs assessment
An assessment of need is free, is not means tested and is open to anyone who appears to require care and support. Isle of Wight Council Adult Social Care carries it out and decides what funded support should follow from it. A relative, friend or advocate may make the request where the person cannot do so themselves. The assessor considers mobility, medication, continence, nutrition, memory and supervision through the night, then produces a support plan naming the kind of setting most likely to meet those needs.
How the weekly fee is met
A financial assessment follows, examining capital and income to fix the contribution. Savings above the national upper capital limit ordinarily mean the placement is privately funded, while savings below it bring support from the authority towards an agreed rate. Nursing placements may also attract the NHS funded nursing care payment towards the registered nursing element, which is paid directly to the home. Where a health condition is the dominant reason for care, ask for an assessment for NHS continuing healthcare, since that route can meet the cost in full.
Questions about the fee itself
Charges differ according to the room, the nursing time required and the staffing a home chooses to run. Ask for a written quotation covering the specific room, together with a list of anything invoiced separately such as hairdressing or escorted appointments. Check the notice period, how often rates are reviewed and what the home does if private funds run down. Raising that last question early is considerably easier than raising it after a contract has been signed.
