About Austen House
We are Austen House, a nursing home near Reading. We care for older people and younger adults needing nursing support, including those living with dementia, and we take respite admissions alongside permanent residents. Nursing cover runs through the day and the night here, which allows us to look after people whose health needs are significant or changeable without anyone having to move when their condition shifts. It also means care at the end of life can be given here, among familiar faces, which matters a great deal to families. For residents living with dementia we build the day around the person rather than expecting them to fit our timetable. Knowing somebody's history and their long standing routines tells us more about how to approach a difficult morning than any general technique, and when a resident is distressed we look for the cause, because there usually is one. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to talk around that. We know what the inspection found, there is an improvement plan in place, and we would far rather go through it openly with a family weighing up a placement than have them come across it some other way.
