About Birchwood Heights Care Home

We are Birchwood Heights, a nursing home in Swanley providing care for adults who need the attention of qualified nurses as well as warmth and good company. Having nurses on duty day and night means we can take people whose health is unpredictable, support those who have come to us straight from a hospital ward, and continue caring for someone whose needs grow rather than asking them to move again. Our residents include older people, adults living with dementia and people with physical disabilities, among them younger adults. We plan each person's care with them and with the people who know them well, and we revisit that plan as often as it needs revisiting. We try to keep the rhythm of normal life. People choose when to get up and go to bed, there is always an alternative at mealtimes if nothing on offer appeals, and the days hold a mix of music, exercise, crafts, outings and quiet time. Nobody is obliged to join in. Some of the most valuable hours in a care home are spent sitting with a cup of tea and someone willing to listen. Families are welcome whenever they want to come, and we will always find a few minutes to talk about how things are going. If you are considering a move, visit and look closely at the small things, how staff speak to residents and whether people look genuinely comfortable. We are confident in what you will find.

Dementia Care at Birchwood Heights Care Home

Eighteen of the 28 homes around Swanley hold a Good or Outstanding rating, a comparison Birchwood Heights cannot join until the CQC has inspected it. Dementia care is judged instead on the ordinary texture of the place, whether routines hold steady, whether the layout feels calm and secure, and whether staff can tell confusion from refusal. The home's own account describes plans written with the person and the people who know them well, and revisited as often as they need to be. That revisiting matters most in dementia, where what helped in March may upset someone by September. Ask what training staff have had, how a resident who becomes distressed in the evening is supported, and what is done when somebody tries the doors.

Older Person Care at Birchwood Heights Care Home

Registration here stretches to 77 places, above the local average of 55 and larger than 20 of the 28 homes in the area. For an older person that scale brings more company and more staff on a corridor, though it can also mean a busier building than someone used to a quiet house expects. The daily work is washing, dressing, medication, meals and the time spent simply talking, which Birchwood Heights describes in its own words as people choosing when to get up and go to bed. Ask the Swanley home how a resident's routine is recorded and who makes sure a late riser is not hurried. Ask how many staff are awake overnight across 77 places, and what happens when someone is unsettled at four in the morning.

Younger Adults at Birchwood Heights Care Home

Ask who else of a similar age lives there, and how interests from before the move are kept up.

With 77 places in the building, ask to look at a real room rather than a show room, and check which equipment comes as standard.
