About House
Dover House is a nursing home in Dover, Kent, and we care for a wider range of people than many nursing homes take on. Older people whose health needs go beyond residential care. Younger adults living with conditions that require qualified nursing. People living with dementia. People living with mental ill health alongside a physical condition. People with physical disabilities, and people living with sight or hearing loss. We also take respite stays when a family carer needs a break or cover. Having registered nurses on duty at all hours is what makes that breadth possible. Medication is managed closely, wound care, catheter care and conditions that shift from week to week are handled on site, and changes in someone's health are picked up early by staff who know them. We work alongside GPs, district nurses, community mental health teams, therapists and hospital staff, and we keep pushing when a resident needs something that is slow to arrive. Dementia care runs through much of our work, and we treat it as care for a person with a history rather than management of a condition. We ask families about working lives, music, food and habits, because that is what lets us make sense of distress somebody cannot put into words. The day here is deliberately unhurried. People wake when they wake, eat what they enjoy, and spend their time as they choose. Families are welcome at any reasonable hour, and we would rather involve relatives properly in decisions than inform them afterwards.
