We are a home care agency based in Waltham Forest, supporting people in their own homes across this part of east London. We work with older people, including many living with dementia, with adults who have a learning disability or autism, with people who have mental health needs, physical disabilities or sight and hearing loss, and with younger adults. Because the people we support are so varied, so is what we do. For some it is brief daily calls covering personal care, medication and a meal, leaving the rest of the day their own. For others it is longer visits built around independence, getting out of the house, keeping appointments and managing the parts of the week that have become difficult. For a family close to exhaustion, it may simply be dependable help at the times of day that had become impossible to cover. We agree the support with the person first, write it down clearly and review it when things change, including reducing it when it is no longer needed. London can be an isolating place, and for a good many of the people we visit we are the regular contact in the week. We treat that as part of the job rather than something extra, and we try to keep the same carers with the same people so the face at the door is a familiar one.
