We are Zeno, based in Stockport and providing support to people in their own homes across the borough. We work with older people, adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, people with a visual or hearing impairment, and younger adults who want to live in their own place with the right backing. Much of our work is about enabling rather than doing. Where somebody wants to cook for themselves, manage their own money, keep a tenancy going, use public transport or hold down a job or a course, we work at it with them patiently and at their pace. We do not decide in advance what is beyond anybody, and we do not treat a difficult stretch as proof that something was unrealistic. Communication is the foundation of the work. We learn how each person tells us what they want, whether through speech, signs, pictures or the way they respond to something, and we make sure every worker understands it before supporting that person alone. Where somebody has a visual or hearing impairment, we make certain that knowledge is shared properly rather than held by one or two people.
