About Milestones Supported Living Service

Milestones Supported Living supports adults in their own homes and tenancies in and around Bristol. Our work is with adults who have learning disabilities, autistic adults, people with mental health needs, people with physical disabilities and people with sensory loss. Supported living means the home belongs to the person rather than to us, and that changes the whole temper of the work. We are there because somebody wants us there, doing the things they have asked for in the way they have asked for them. We do not run a household, we help somebody run their own, and a good year for us is one where a person is doing things themselves that they could not do before. Support covers the ordinary business of a life: cooking, shopping, money and bills, appointments, travel, work or college, keeping in touch with people, and personal care and medication where that is needed. How much we do and how much we deliberately stand back is agreed with the person and reviewed as they move forward, because support that never changes is support that holds somebody back. Communication is the foundation. Not everybody we support uses speech, and learning how an individual shows what they want, and what they refuse, comes before everything else. We record what we learn so the whole team responds alike. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us outstanding overall, which we read as a sign that the daily things are being done properly.
