Our aim is simple enough: to provide the right amount of help, at the times it is genuinely needed, so that people can carry on living where they want to live. We visit older people who need support with washing, dressing, meals, medication and keeping the house in order. We support people living with dementia, where familiar carers and a steady routine matter more than almost anything else. We work with younger adults, with people who have a physical disability and with people whose sight or hearing has declined, adjusting how we communicate and how we move about somebody's home accordingly. We are careful about rotas. Sending a stranger to carry out personal care is not acceptable to us, so we build small teams around each person and introduce new carers properly before they visit alone. Our first step is always a visit. We sit down with the person and, if they wish, with family, and we work out what would actually help. The plan that comes out of that is written in plain language and reviewed as needs change.
