We are part of Royal Mencap Society, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism in west London, both in their own homes and through shared lives arrangements where somebody lives with an approved carer and their household. What we are aiming at is an ordinary life, properly supported. That means starting with what a person wants their week to look like rather than with a list of tasks, and offering support for the parts of life that are genuinely hard while stepping back from the parts that are not. Where a decision is difficult, our job is to help somebody make it rather than to make it on their behalf. In practice the support covers daily living and personal care, managing money, appointments and paperwork, getting out to work, college, a club or to see family, and keeping a tenancy and a routine going. Communication takes a great deal of our attention. Where somebody uses signs, symbols, a communication aid or their own set of gestures, we learn it, record it and make sure everybody supporting that person works the same way. That needs consistent staffing, so we keep teams small and we listen when somebody tells us a match is not right. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.
