Our first job in those weeks is to reduce the pressure without taking the household over. In practice that means help with washing and dressing, medication prompted or administered, meals, moving safely about the home, laundry, shopping, appointments and time to talk properly. Some households want one visit a week and others need four calls a day. For people living with dementia we hold to the same carers and the same times as far as the rota allows, and we follow the routines already in place instead of introducing better ones of our own. Living in London makes consistency harder and more important, so we keep rounds tight and local and we tell people who to expect.
