We are Double Ark, based on Sydenham Road in Lewisham, and we provide care in people's own homes across south east London. The people we visit are a deliberately wide group: older people, many living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, adults living with mental ill health, people with physical disabilities, people living with sight or hearing loss, younger adults, and people living with an eating disorder. Because the range is broad, we do not begin from a fixed offer. We begin with the person, in their own home, asking how the day actually runs, what has become difficult, what they want to keep doing themselves, and where help would genuinely help. The plan comes out of that conversation and is revised as circumstances change. In practice support might mean personal care, a prompt and a check with medication, meals cooked and eaten with company, help getting safely about the flat or house, support to get out into the community, or several calls a day. For autistic people and for people living with an eating disorder especially, consistency and an absence of judgement matter more than anything we could promise in writing. London can be isolating as well as convenient, and for some of the people we visit our carer is the main person they will see that day. We take that seriously.
