About PBS Service
Kent PBS supports adults in their own homes across Maidstone and the wider county. We work with older people and with younger adults, and our experience covers learning disabilities and autism, mental health needs and physical disabilities. Much of our work is with people whose behaviour has been found difficult by other places, and our starting assumption is that behaviour is communication rather than a problem to be contained. Before we support somebody we spend time understanding what they are telling us, what makes a day go badly, what helps, and what has been tried before and failed. Out of that comes a plan written with the person and the people who know them, aimed at changing circumstances rather than changing the person. In practice support covers personal care, medication and health appointments, and a great deal of ordinary life: cooking, shopping, money, travel, work or college, and getting out to do the things anybody else would do. We keep teams small and consistent, because unpredictability is often the very thing that makes life hard for the people we support. We record what we learn in detail, so a colleague coming new to a shift responds the same way as everyone else rather than improvising. Families, advocates and other professionals are involved as much as the person wants. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall, and we are glad to talk through how we would approach a particular situation.
