They want to stay in their own home, and a handful of practical difficulties are making that hard. So those are what we deal with: help with washing and dressing, medicines taken as they should be, meals cooked and actually eaten, the housework and the shopping kept under control, and a way of getting out to appointments and to see people. We fit the visits around the person's day instead of ours, and we would rather agree a pattern we can genuinely keep than an ambitious one that collapses in the first busy week. We keep the group of care workers visiting each person small, because meeting an unfamiliar face at the door is unsettling for anybody and particularly so for somebody living with dementia. Before we start, we agree the support with the person and, where they want it, with their family, covering how they like things done, what they would rather manage themselves and who we should contact if we are worried.
