Kent Enablement at Home supports people in their own homes across Ashford and the surrounding parts of Kent. The word enablement in our name is deliberate. Our aim is to help people do things for themselves wherever that is possible, rather than doing everything for them and quietly removing their independence in the process. We work with older people and younger adults, people living with dementia, people with a learning disability, autistic people, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. The pattern of support varies enormously, from a single short call each day to several longer visits. Every arrangement starts with a proper conversation about what has become difficult and, just as importantly, what the person still wants to handle alone. That distinction shapes everything we do. We write down what has been agreed and revisit it as circumstances change, in either direction. We put real effort into continuity. Familiar carers make support far easier to accept, and they notice quickly when somebody is not themselves, which is often what prevents a small problem becoming a serious one. Safe
Inspectors found that people's safety was closely monitored. Staff had guidance to follow to reduce risks, and people were promptly referred to other healthcare agencies if a risk was found. Staff knew the signs of abuse and what to do. There were enough staff, they were recruited safely, and people received their medicines as prescribed by their GP.
Effective
Inspectors found that staff received the training, skills and support to meet people's needs. New staff completed a robust induction. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives, and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible.
Caring
Inspectors found that staff were kind and friendly towards people and promoted their privacy and dignity at all times. Staff worked alongside people to build their skills, knowledge and confidence to live as independently as possible.
Responsive
Inspectors found that people were at the centre of their care and support. They had goals that were worked towards and eventually achieved. Systems were in place to respond quickly to changes in people's health needs, and the service worked jointly with other health agencies. People were asked for their views and encouraged to suggest improvements.
Well-led
Inspectors found that staff felt there was an open culture and they were kept informed about changes in people's needs. Weekly meetings discussed people's progress and whether more support was needed from health care professionals. Regular quality monitoring was in place to measure how well the service worked.
What people told the inspectors
People spoke positively about the service. They said staff had helped them increase their skills and independence, and they said they would recommend the agency to others.
