About First Key

First Key Hereford supports people in their own homes in Hereford and across the county. We work with older people, adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability, people with visual or hearing impairment and younger adults. A good deal of our work is less about personal care tasks and more about making an ordinary life workable. Running a household. Cooking, shopping and managing money. Getting to college, work or activities. Keeping up with family and friends. For many of the people we support, having somebody reliable who turns up and who knows them is what holds a week together. Support is planned around what each person wants to be able to do rather than around risk alone. Where somebody needs a great deal of help, we still look for the parts they can take on, because independence slips away quietly unless it is actively protected. Covering a largely rural county means distances are real and so is isolation, so we build travel time into rotas properly and keep the same carers going to the same households. We learn how each person communicates, including those who use little or no speech, and we adapt to them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding.
