We are a home care agency based in Stoke on Trent, supporting older people to carry on living in their own homes across the surrounding area. Home is where most people would choose to stay, and our job is to make that realistic and safe. We begin with a visit and a proper conversation about how the day works at the moment, where it has become difficult, and what sort of help would be welcome and what would not. From that we agree a plan with the person and, if they wish, with their family, and we write it down plainly so that everybody knows what has been agreed. Support can include help with getting up and going to bed, washing and dressing, prompting or assisting with medication, preparing meals, laundry and light housework, shopping, and getting out to appointments or into town. Some people need a short call each morning, while others need several visits a day. We keep the same carers going to the same households wherever we can. Older people should not have to explain themselves to a stranger each week, and a familiar carer is the one most likely to notice when something is not right.
