    • Care Home

Glenthorne No2 Care Home is in Thornton Cleveleys, Lancashire. We provide residential care in a setting that is small enough for staff to know everybody properly and for daily life to feel unhurried. We support people living with dementia, and our approach rests on familiarity and patience rather than activity for its own sake. We support residents with physical disabilities, and residents living with sight or hearing loss, adapting the way we communicate and the way the building is used so that nobody is shut out of their own day. We also support people affected by eating disorders, where mealtimes need care, discretion and a plan agreed with the person rather than imposed on them. Life here is decided by the people who live here. Getting up time, meals, company or quiet, visitors, going out: these are choices, and we make them possible rather than making them for people. Families are welcome and we would rather relatives called in whenever suits them. Respite stays are available too. They give family carers a planned break, and they suit people who need a period of support after illness or a hospital admission before going home. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We do not treat that as the end of the conversation, and we keep asking residents and families what could be done better. Please come and see us if you are looking at homes in the area.

    • Care Home

The Kingfisher Care Home is a residential care home in Thornton Cleveleys. We look after older people who need daily care and support, including many people living with dementia. Our aim is a house that feels like a home rather than a facility. People get up when they wake, eat what they actually like, and spend their days as they choose, whether in company or quietly with a newspaper. For someone living with dementia, familiar faces, meals at expected times and routines that hold together do more good than anything complicated, and so does having enough time in the day that nobody is hurried through anything. Families are welcome whenever they want to come, and we would far rather have relatives in and out as part of ordinary life than visiting formally. We also offer respite stays, for a family carer needing a rest or for somebody recovering after a spell in hospital before going home again. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. It matters to us, though the question we ask ourselves more often is whether somebody looks settled and content a month after moving in. If you would like to look round, please ring us and come at a time that suits you. You are welcome to see the home on an ordinary day.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Thornton-cleveleys

It pays to start on the funding side early, because the process has its own timetable and will not be hurried once a home has been chosen. Establishing what level of care is needed and who will meet the cost can proceed at the same time as the search itself, and doing both at once usually saves weeks.

Asking for a care needs assessment

Any adult who appears to need care and support can request a free assessment of their needs, and a dementia diagnosis is not a condition of getting one. Lancashire County Council carries out the assessment and arranges funded support for people who meet the eligibility criteria. A relative providing regular unpaid care can ask for a separate carer's assessment of their own needs, which is worth doing in its own right. Neither assessment costs anything or obliges you to accept what is proposed.

What dementia care costs

Where someone is found eligible, a financial assessment of income and capital sets what the authority contributes and what the person pays. Many families fund a placement themselves and settle directly with the home. Fees are quoted weekly and differ according to the room, the level of support needed, and whether specialist dementia provision is involved, so ask each home for the figure in writing along with a note of what falls outside it. Where health needs predominate, NHS continuing healthcare may apply and is assessed separately.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Thornton-cleveleys

Reading the inspection record

Thornton Lodge Care Home, Redbricks Care Home, and Westport House Care Home each hold a Good rating, while DIL Home has been asked to improve. One result out of step with the others is a prompt to read that report rather than to discount the home. Find out which of the five key questions the concern fell under, how recent the inspection was, and what the home has done since. Ask the manager about it directly, because the quality of that answer is informative in itself.

What good dementia care looks like in practice

Consistency is the thing to look for. Ask how often the same carers work with the same residents, what dementia training the team has had, and how a resident's history and preferences are recorded and passed to whoever is on duty overnight. Ask what happens when someone becomes anxious or wants to walk about, and listen for an answer about reassurance rather than restriction. Calm surroundings, clear landmarks, and flexible mealtimes matter more than new furnishings.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Thornton-cleveleys

How many dementia care homes are there in Thornton-cleveleys?

Thornton-cleveleys has 4 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 8 CQC registered care homes in Thornton-cleveleys: 3 Good, 1 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Thornton-cleveleys were inspected most recently?

DIL Home (Thornton-Cleveleys) (1 July 2023), Redbricks Care Home (13 May 2023) and Westport House Care Home (8 February 2022) have the most recent CQC reports.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Thornton-cleveleys?

Contact Lancashire County Council adult social care and ask for an assessment of needs, which you can request for a relative with their consent. The assessment is free and places no obligation on you afterwards. An assessor will look at how the person manages day to day, what family already provides, and where support would make the most difference. Keep the reference number you are given, as it saves repeating the background at every later stage.

Can Lancashire County Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It can, where a care needs assessment finds the person eligible for support and a financial assessment shows they qualify for help with the fees. Lancashire County Council is responsible for both stages, and the contribution depends on the person's income and capital. Some people have the full cost met, others a share of it, and others are assessed as paying for themselves. Where the dominant need is a health need, NHS continuing healthcare may apply through a separate process.

Which care homes in Thornton-cleveleys provide dementia care?

Four residential care homes are listed on this page: Thornton Lodge Care Home, Redbricks Care Home, Westport House Care Home, and DIL Home. Each is registered with the Care Quality Commission to support people living with dementia, and each profile carries the registration details and the most recent inspection judgement. With only four to weigh up, looking at all of them is realistic. Availability will depend on whether a suitable room is free when you enquire.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

A dementia care home provides personal care, supervision, and support with daily living from trained care staff. A dementia nursing home offers the same but keeps registered nurses on duty, so it can meet clinical needs such as complex medication, wound care, or swallowing difficulties. All four providers on this page are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If nursing input is likely to be needed, raise it at the first enquiry so the home can tell you honestly what it can manage.

How far in advance should I start looking for dementia care in Thornton-cleveleys?

Begin as soon as the question arises, even if a move still feels distant. Two or three months of lead time lets you visit, read the inspection reports, and get an assessment moving without deciding under pressure. Where circumstances have changed suddenly, after a fall or a hospital admission, contact all four homes and be clear about what is needed and when. An assessment already completed is the single greatest help when time is short.

What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Thornton-cleveleys?

Ask about dementia training, how much the staff team changes, and how consistently the same carers work with the same residents. Ask what the home does when a resident becomes distressed and how families are involved in decisions. Where a home has been asked to improve, ask what the inspector found and what evidence exists that it has been addressed. Visit twice if you can, once by arrangement and once unannounced, and compare what you saw.
