    • Care Home

Acorn House is a residential care home in Prenton on the Wirral, and we provide a home for older people who need support with daily living. Respite stays are available too, planned in advance or arranged at shorter notice when a family needs cover. Most of what makes a care home good is unspectacular detail. Knowing which chair is somebody's. Getting the tea right. Not hurrying a person through a wash because the morning is busy. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, and we try to do it so quietly that it feels like part of the day rather than a procedure. Dementia care is a significant part of our work. We keep the daily rhythm and the surroundings steady, give people time to find their words instead of finishing their sentences, and take trouble to learn about earlier life, because knowing what somebody did for a living and what they loved tells us a great deal once language becomes unreliable. Families usually hold that story, and we ask for it early. Respite bookings are planned with the same care as permanent moves, since a break only rests a family if the person staying with us is genuinely settled rather than merely safe. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary afternoon and ask us the awkward questions as well as the easy ones. A home is best judged when nothing has been arranged for a visitor's benefit.

    • Care Home

Oxton Grange Care Home in Prenton offers both residential and nursing care to older people, including many residents living with dementia. Having qualified nurses on site means people can stay with us as their needs change, rather than facing another move at a point in life when moving is the last thing anyone wants. We give close attention to medication, pain relief, skin care and nutrition, and we involve GPs and community teams early rather than late. Beyond that, our job is to make the day worth having. Mornings are flexible, because being hurried out of bed at a set hour is nobody's idea of comfortable. Meals are cooked on the premises and adjusted happily for anyone who fancies something different. Support with washing and dressing is given at the resident's pace rather than the rota's. For residents living with dementia we keep routines steady and take real trouble to learn a person's history, because that knowledge is usually what allows us to settle someone who is anxious, and it makes ordinary conversation better too. We also offer respite care, whether to give a family carer a break or to help someone regain strength after a hospital stay. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

    • Care Home

Hillgrove Residential Home is in Prenton on the Wirral, and we provide residential care for people living with dementia. Respite stays are available as well. Because dementia care is what we do rather than one of several things we do, the whole house is arranged around it. The daily rhythm stays consistent. The surroundings stay familiar. Staff are kept as steady as we can manage, because a recognised face does more good than any technique. We give people time to find their words rather than finishing their sentences for them, and we treat distress as something to understand rather than something to stop. A good deal of that depends on knowing the person. We ask families about working lives, habits, music, food and what somebody was always like, because that knowledge is what makes sense of a mood or a repeated question. Relatives know things no assessment will ever capture, and we would rather ask than guess. We should be open about our position. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We have worked through the findings with our team and those areas are where our effort is concentrated at present. We would rather tell you ourselves and then let you come and judge for yourself. Anyone considering Hillgrove is welcome to visit on an ordinary day and ask us about it directly.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Prenton

What the registration covers

Both providers listed for Prenton, Tree Vale Limited Acorn House and Hillgrove Residential Home, are registered with the Care Quality Commission as residential care homes. That means accommodation together with personal care such as help with washing, dressing, medication and meals, rather than nursing delivered on site by qualified nurses. If a registered nurse is likely to be needed around the clock, that is a different registration and a different search.

How the two compare

Tree Vale Limited Acorn House holds a Good rating. Hillgrove Residential Home sits at Requires Improvement, which is a reason to read that report carefully rather than an automatic no, since such findings often concern record keeping, staffing levels or management oversight and a home may already have acted on them. Ask the manager what has changed since inspectors last called and what evidence they can show you. Then ask the questions dementia makes essential: what training staff hold and how often it is refreshed, how the late afternoon and early evening are occupied, what happens when a resident becomes distressed or wants to walk, and whether the layout helps people find their own room unaided.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Prenton

The care needs assessment

Anyone who appears to need care and support can request a free care needs assessment, whatever their savings. The duty rests with Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council adult social care, which establishes what help is required, whether the eligibility criteria are met, and what funded support follows. A relative providing regular unpaid care can claim a carer's assessment of their own.

Meeting the cost

Dementia care is often charged at a higher rate because of the staffing it requires, so ask for a written breakdown of the fee and what sits outside it. Where capital falls below the national threshold the council may contribute; above it the place is normally funded privately. NHS continuing healthcare is assessed separately where the need is mainly a health one.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Prenton

How many dementia care homes are there in Prenton?

Prenton has 3 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 6 CQC registered care homes in Prenton: 2 Good, 1 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Prenton were inspected most recently?

Tree Vale Limited Acorn House (31 July 2026), Hillgrove Residential Home (2 December 2025) and Oxton Grange Care Home (1 February 2024) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which homes in Prenton provide dementia care?

3 residential care homes registered with the Care Quality Commission appear in this Prenton listing. They are Tree Vale Limited Acorn House, which holds a Good rating, and Hillgrove Residential Home, which is rated Requires Improvement. Each has its own profile on Care Assura setting out its registration and inspection history. With only two in the area, it is sensible to read both profiles and to look at neighbouring areas too.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home registered for dementia provides accommodation with personal care, so staff help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and daily routines, with training geared to memory loss. A nursing home holds a registration requiring qualified nurses on site, which lets it manage clinical needs such as complex wounds, tube feeding or unstable conditions alongside dementia. Both providers in this Prenton listing are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If nursing input is likely as the condition advances, consider nursing registered homes from the outset.

What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Prenton?

Ask what dementia training the staff receive, how often it is refreshed, and how long most of the team have worked there, since familiar faces reduce confusion. Find out how the day is structured, what happens in the late afternoon, and how the home responds when a resident becomes distressed or wants to leave. Where a home is rated Requires Improvement, ask specifically what has changed since the inspection and what evidence supports it. Request the contract and the complaints procedure in writing before you commit.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Prenton?

Contact the adult social care team at Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council, which has a legal duty to assess anyone who appears to need care and support whatever their finances. The request can come from the person themselves, from a relative, or from a professional such as a memory clinic, general practitioner or hospital discharge coordinator. An assessor will discuss daily tasks, memory, safety at home and the support already in place, then explain which needs are eligible. Ask for the outcome and the support plan in writing, as both help when approaching homes.

Can Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council fund a dementia care placement?

It can, where the care needs assessment identifies eligible needs and the financial assessment shows capital below the national threshold. Contributions are calculated individually, and most people pay something towards fees from income such as pensions. Above the threshold a placement is usually funded privately, although a deferred payment arrangement secured against a property is sometimes possible. Request both assessments early, because arranging them takes time.

How soon should we start looking at dementia care?

Start earlier than feels necessary, because dementia progresses unevenly and a suitable home may have a waiting list. With a short local list, allowing extra time to look at neighbouring areas matters particularly here. Looking while the person can still take part in the decision also means their own preferences shape the outcome. If a crisis or a hospital stay forces the pace, a shortlist prepared in advance makes an enormous difference.
