- Care Home
The Beeches is a residential care home in Castleford. We provide care for older people, including those living with dementia and people with a physical disability, and we offer respite stays. We are a residential home rather than a nursing home, so our strength is in the daily business of living well. Help with washing and dressing, getting about safely, medication, meals that people look forward to, and the company that so often disappears when someone has been struggling alone at home. Where nursing input is needed we work alongside the district nursing team and local GPs. Mobility matters here. For residents with a physical disability we focus on what can still be done rather than listing what cannot, and we make sure equipment, layout and the amount of help offered are right. Being helped too much is its own kind of loss. With dementia, we keep the day steady and the surroundings familiar, and we ask families to tell us about the person's working life, their interests and their habits. Knowing somebody was always up at five, or never drank tea, saves a lot of confusion later. Respite stays suit people recovering after illness and family carers who need a break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Do come and look round The Beeches, meet residents, and ask us whatever you need to.

- Care Home
Newfield Lodge is a residential care home in Castleford, Wakefield, offering a comfortable and settled home to older people who need support with daily living. We care for residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a short period or whose usual carer needs a rest. We aim for ordinary life, properly supported. Residents choose when to get up, what to do with their day and how much company they want. There are things going on for those who enjoy them and no obligation for anyone else. Meals are cooked here, preferences are remembered, and food is treated as one of the pleasures of the day rather than a task to be got through. Dementia support runs through everything we do. We learn each resident's history and habits so that reassurance means something, and we keep routines familiar and the pace unhurried. Staff who know a person well can head off distress long before it builds. We work closely with local GPs and community nurses so that health concerns are picked up early, and we keep families properly informed rather than only ringing when something goes wrong. Relatives are welcome whenever it suits them. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us good overall. If you are thinking about a move for yourself or a family member, do come and see the home and ask us whatever you like.

- Care Home
Newfield Lodge is a residential care home in Castleford. We support older people who can no longer manage at home without help, including many residents living with dementia. Our starting point is always the person's own routine. We would rather fit around a lifetime of habits than ask someone to adapt to ours, so we find out early what the day normally looks like, what someone still wants to do without assistance, and what they would quietly rather have help with. Dignity in a care home is mostly made up of small practical decisions of that kind, taken consistently. For residents with dementia we keep things familiar and unhurried. Faces stay the same as far as our rotas allow, the building is arranged so that getting about does not rely on memory, and when someone is distressed we look for the reason rather than simply trying to settle them. Families often know that reason before we do, which is one of several good arguments for keeping them closely involved. There is usually something going on here, though nobody is pressed into joining in. Time in the garden, a quiet lounge, visitors at a sensible hour and a decent cup of tea cover most of what people actually ask for. The Care Quality Commission rated us good overall at our most recent inspection. We are pleased with that and we are not complacent about it. Do come and look round.

- Care Home
We are Breadalbane Residential Home in Castleford, in the Wakefield district. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia and people with a physical disability, and we also take respite stays. Residential care means helping with what has become hard work and leaving everything else in the hands of the person. Washing and dressing, meals, medication, getting about safely, and the ordinary company that makes a day worth having. For health needs beyond our registration we work with district nurses and GPs rather than stretching to cover them. Dementia takes up much of our day, and what helps most is knowing the person. Someone who worked for decades to a particular rhythm often still carries it, and a routine built around that goes better than one imposed on top. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out plainly than leave a family to find it elsewhere. We know what the inspection identified, work is in hand on it, and we are willing to go through the detail with anyone considering a place here.

- Care Home
Cymar House is a residential care home in Castleford. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and we support younger adults too. We also offer respite stays. The tests we set ourselves are small. Does somebody get a cup of tea at ten at night if they want one. Is anybody sitting in a wet chair. Has a quiet resident been spoken to today. For dementia we rely on consistency and on biography. The same faces, the same order of things, and enough knowledge of a life to understand what is being reached for. Our latest overall rating is requires improvement, and we are not going to bury it. We have taken the findings seriously and there is work still in hand. Relatives are part of how we work rather than visitors to it. They usually know things about a person that no assessment captures, and we ask them. Privacy is easily lost in a shared setting, so we guard it. Doors get knocked on, personal care happens behind them, and nobody is discussed within earshot of others. Anybody considering us should come without an appointment, talk to residents and relatives away from staff, and press us for specifics about what has changed and what has not yet.

- Care Home
We at Highfield Care Centre offer residential care in the heart of Castleford, providing a welcoming home for older people, younger adults, and those living with dementia. Our setting in this well connected West Yorkshire town gives residents the comfort of familiar surroundings whilst remaining within easy reach of family and friends across the wider Leeds area. Located within the WF postcode area, our home sits within a community that residents and their loved ones know well. Castleford offers a blend of local amenities, green spaces, and transport links that make visiting straightforward, something we know matters deeply to families who want to remain closely involved in the day to day lives of those in our care. The familiarity of the local area can also be a great source of comfort to residents, particularly those living with memory difficulties, who often draw reassurance from recognisable surroundings and a sense of belonging. Our care is built around the individual needs of every person who lives with us. As a residential care home, we support older people who need help with the everyday tasks of life, offering assistance with personal care, mobility, medication, and the small daily routines that bring structure and dignity to each day. For residents living with dementia, we focus on creating a calm, predictable environment where familiar faces, gentle routines, and meaningful activity help to reduce anxiety and support wellbeing. We understand that dementia affects every person differently, and we take time to learn about each resident's history, preferences, and personality so that the support we offer feels personal rather than clinical. We also welcome younger adults whose needs are best met in a residential setting, recognising that age alone should never define the type of support someone receives. Whether a resident is with us for the long term or for a shorter period of recovery and respite, our aim is to ensure they feel listened to, respected, and genuinely at home. For families, choosing a care home is rarely an easy decision, and we believe honesty about quality matters. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission, carried out in August 2022, gave us an overall rating of Requires Improvement. Within that inspection, we were rated Good for being Effective, Caring, and Responsive, meaning that inspectors recognised the warmth and skill of our team, the personalised nature of our care planning, and our ability to respond to changing needs. The areas identified for improvement related to how Safe and Well led the home was assessed to be. We take these findings seriously and view them as a clear roadmap for the changes we continue to make. Improvement in social care is an ongoing journey, and we are committed to strengthening the areas highlighted whilst protecting the qualities our residents and families already value. We encourage anyone considering Highfield Care Centre to visit us, meet our team, and see the home for themselves. A conversation in person often answers questions that words on a page cannot, and we would be glad to talk through your loved one's needs, share more about our daily life, and explain the progress we are making. Choosing the right care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we are here to support you with openness, kindness, and the reassurance that every resident matters to us.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Castleford
Starting with an assessment
Funded support opens with a care needs assessment, which Wakefield Metropolitan District Council carries out for adults living in this area. A request can be made by the person needing care, by a relative or friend acting on their behalf, or by a professional such as a general practitioner or a memory service. There is no charge whatever the household income. Where dementia is involved the assessment matters especially, because it records how needs are likely to change and whether a home providing personal care alone will remain suitable. Where a relative gives regular unpaid support, request a carer's assessment at the same time.
Fees and contributions
Where eligible needs are identified, a financial assessment establishes the council's contribution and the person's own. Savings and capital above the national threshold ordinarily mean paying privately, with the weekly fee agreed directly with the home. Some homes charge a higher rate for dementia care on the grounds of staffing levels, so ask whether that applies and what it buys. Chiropody, hairdressing, newspapers and transport to appointments are commonly billed separately and add up considerably across a year.
Direct payments
A council contribution can be taken as a direct payment rather than a placement the council arranges, which keeps the choice of home with the family. That matters where a specific home suits a person's routines better than another.
Choosing between dementia care homes in Castleford
Taking the mixed ratings seriously
Two homes here are rated Good and three have been told they require improvement. Open each report rather than working from the label. It shows which of the regulator's five key questions drove the judgement and how recently inspectors visited. Where improvement has been required, the report names precisely what was found, and in dementia care it is worth checking whether concerns touched on staffing numbers, how medicines are handled, or how residents in distress were supported, since those bear directly on daily wellbeing. Findings about paperwork or premises matter less than findings about how people were actually treated.
What to look for in dementia care specifically
Ask what dementia training staff receive and how often it is refreshed, and how many staff are on duty overnight as well as during the day. Look at whether the building helps orientation, with clear signage, familiar objects and space to walk safely rather than corridors that end in locked doors. Ask how the home learns a person's history and preferences, and what happens when someone becomes distressed or resistant to care, since the honesty of that answer tells you a great deal. The Beeches and Newfield Lodge each carry a profile here, as do Cymar House, Highfield Care Centre and Breadalbane Residential Home.
Before a move is agreed
Read the contract on notice periods and fee reviews, and ask what happens if needs progress beyond what the registration covers. Ask to see a sample care plan and how often it is reviewed with relatives.
Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Castleford
How many dementia care homes are there in Castleford?
Castleford has 6 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 13 CQC registered care homes in Castleford: 3 Good, 3 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
Which dementia care homes in Castleford were inspected most recently?
The Beeches (24 November 2025), Cymar House (30 June 2022) and Breadalbane Residential Home (26 May 2022) have the most recent CQC reports.
Can Wakefield Metropolitan District Council fund a dementia care home placement?
It can, where a care needs assessment identifies eligible needs and a financial assessment shows the person qualifies for support. The financial assessment considers income, savings and capital, and anyone holding assets above the national threshold is normally expected to meet the fees themselves. Support may be taken as a direct payment, leaving the family to arrange the placement, or provided as a place the council commissions. Where dementia has progressed to the point of nursing needs, it is also worth asking about continuing healthcare funding.
How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Castleford?
Contact the adult social care team at Wakefield Metropolitan District Council, the authority responsible for assessments in this area. The request can come from the person needing care, from a relative or friend acting for them, or from a professional such as a general practitioner or memory service. The assessment looks at what someone manages alone and where support is needed, and it is free regardless of income or savings. If a relative provides regular unpaid care, ask for a carer's assessment at the same time.
How far in advance should I start looking at dementia care homes?
Where a move is planned rather than urgent, two to three months gives room to request an assessment, visit homes and read inspection reports without pressure. With dementia there is a further reason to start early: visiting while the person can still take part in the decision usually produces a better outcome than deciding for them later. After a crisis or a hospital admission a placement can be arranged within days, but the choice will be much narrower. Dementia places can be harder to find at short notice than general residential ones.
Which providers in Castleford offer dementia care?
6 residential care homes match this search for dementia care in Castleford, and they are Cymar House, The Beeches, Newfield Lodge, Highfield Care Centre and Breadalbane Residential Home. Each has a profile setting out registration details and its current Care Quality Commission rating. Vacancies change regularly, so a home listed here will not necessarily have a room free when you enquire. With only five to consider, reading every inspection report is entirely practical.
What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Castleford?
Ask what dementia training staff receive, how often it is refreshed and how many staff are on duty overnight as well as by day. Find out how the home learns someone's history and preferences, and what happens when a resident becomes distressed or resists personal care. Look at whether the building aids orientation, with clear signage and safe space to walk. Where improvement has been required, ask directly what has changed since the inspection and what evidence the manager can show you.
What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?
A dementia care home is registered to provide personal care, meaning help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and the routine of the day, with staff experienced in supporting people with dementia. A dementia nursing home provides that same care with a qualified nurse on duty at all times, which becomes necessary where dementia is accompanied by clinical needs such as swallowing difficulties or an unstable long term condition. All 6 providers listed on this page are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. A care needs assessment will establish which level of registration is required.
