About The Old Vicarage
The Old Vicarage is a residential care home in Grange over Sands in Westmorland and Furness. We provide a home for older people who need support with daily living, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for those needing care for a short period. Being a smaller home in a small town is the point rather than a limitation. Everybody knows everybody, nobody gets lost in a system, and many of the people living here have known this part of the country all their lives, which means the community keeps coming through the door. Visitors are welcome at whatever hour works for them rather than whatever suits our rota. Coming to live in a care home is a significant thing, and the first weeks matter more than any account of the building. We spend them learning about the person: what they did for a living, what they cannot be doing with, what time they have always had their breakfast, whether they would rather be in company or left in peace with the radio on. Dementia care rests on patience and a recognisable day. We avoid springing things on people, we keep routines familiar, and when somebody is distressed we go looking for the cause rather than simply trying to settle them. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.
