About Vane Hill
Vane Hill is a residential care home in Torquay. We look after older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people managing mental health conditions, and we offer respite stays for anyone who needs somewhere for a short period. What we try to protect here is ordinariness. A care home can very easily start running to its own convenience, with everybody getting up at the same time and doing the same thing, and we work against that. People choose their own hours, decide how much company they want, and spend the day as they wish. Some are in the middle of everything, some prefer their own room and their own quiet, and both are perfectly acceptable. Meals are cooked here and we take an interest in what people genuinely like rather than what is simplest to produce. For those living with dementia we keep things calm and predictable and we go along with the person rather than arguing with them. For those with mental health needs we work alongside community teams and stay steady through the harder stretches. Families are welcome whenever it suits them, and we would much rather they dropped in than made appointments. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.
