About The Wheatlands

The Wheatlands is a residential care home in Shrewsbury, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people with physical disabilities, and people living with sight or hearing loss. Most of those living here are younger adults, and we also offer respite stays. This is somebody's home first and a care setting second, and that shows in small decisions more than in anything we could write. People choose how their rooms look, what goes on the shopping list, when they get up and what happens at the weekend. Where somebody wants to cook, we cook with them rather than for them. Communication is where we start rather than where we get to. Where a person communicates differently, whether through a sensory impairment or for any other reason, we sort that out properly at the beginning, because everything else we do depends on it. We are careful about routine and about warning people of change in good time. For many of those living here, knowing what is happening and who will be there is what makes a day workable. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here what they would change, and we would rather deal with a small complaint now than a serious one later.
