About Normanton Retirement Home

Normanton Retirement Home is a residential care home in Shrewsbury, supporting older people and younger adults across Shropshire, including people living with dementia, people with mental health needs and people who have a physical disability. We should deal with the rating first. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to talk around that. Inspectors found things that were not good enough, we accept the findings rather than argue with them, and we are working through what was identified. Anyone considering the home should ask us directly what was raised and what has changed since, and expect a proper answer instead of reassurance. What we are trying to do here is what any decent residential home does: take the practical weight off somebody's shoulders so that the rest of life can carry on. Food cooked in our own kitchen that people want to eat. Personal care given calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Warm rooms that look like somebody's own. Staff awake at night. A day with enough shape to be worth getting up for, and no obligation to join in with anything. For residents with a physical disability, the right equipment and staff who know their preferred way of being helped to move matter enormously. With dementia we work on familiar faces and a calm house rather than correction. Come and see the place at a busy time of day and judge it as it is now rather than as a grade describes it.

More about the care at Normanton Retirement Home

Dementia Care at Normanton Retirement Home

Royal Shrewsbury Hospital is 2.1 miles away in a straight line, and the station a mile off. Dementia care is on this home's registration, and what generally helps is familiar staff, a calm layout and a day that holds its shape. With 26 places the building is small enough for faces to become familiar, though that still depends on staffing levels. Since the published report dates from March 2020, the position today is something to establish by asking. Ask how distress is handled and whether any part of the home is secured. Ask how the plan changes as dementia advances and who reviews it.

Residential Care at Normanton Retirement Home

Twenty six places make Normanton smaller than 66 of the 118 homes in the area, where the average is 33. Residential care means everyday living support without nursing staff on site, so meals, personal care, medication and activity are care workers' responsibility. The GP and district nurses cover clinical needs, which separates it from a nursing home. West Midlands fees commonly sit between £850 and £1150 a week, while Shropshire usually pays about £680 to £820. The home describes a day with enough shape to be worth getting up for and no obligation to join anything. Ask what inspectors found in 2020 and what a current visit would show instead.

Older Person Care at Normanton Retirement Home

The last inspection here was published on 12 March 2020 with an overall rating of requires improvement, and 51 of the 118 homes nearby have reported more recently since. A fresh registration was granted on 1 October 2026 to Normanton Services, so the rating may relate to a previous provider and should not be credited to this one. Older person care is on the registration, covering help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and company. The home says food is cooked in its own kitchen, personal care given calmly and in private, and staff awake at night. It invites people to ask directly what inspectors raised and what has changed.

Mental Health at Normanton Retirement Home

Eighty two of the 118 homes locally are rated Good or Outstanding, matching the Shropshire figure of 69 per cent. Mental health is among this home's registered categories, and stability, routine and dignity usually count for more than any single intervention. Ask what experience the staff have and who is called when somebody becomes acutely unwell.

Younger Adults at Normanton Retirement Home

The registration now in force dates from 1 October 2026 under Normanton Services. Younger adults are on that registration alongside older people, though 26 places in a retirement home will lean older. Someone under 65 usually wants different hours, company and activity. Ask who of that age lives there and what their week contains.

Physical Disability at Normanton Retirement Home

Greenfields Dental Surgery is 0.3 miles from the home and a pharmacy 0.4. Physical disability is on the registration, so the practical questions concern accessible bathrooms, the right equipment and staff who know how a person prefers to be moved.
