About Germaina House
We are Germaina House, a residential care home in Redcar. We look after older people who need daily support and company, including those living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people with sight or hearing loss. We also welcome people for respite stays, whether that is to recover after a spell in hospital or to give a family carer a proper break. Life here runs at a domestic pace. People get up when they are ready, eat food cooked on the premises, and spend the day as they wish, whether that is in company in the lounge, out in the fresh air or quietly in their own room with the door shut. Our staff help with washing, dressing, mobility and medication, and they do it without hurry, because being rushed through personal care is one of the quickest ways to lose your dignity. Where someone struggles with eating, whether because of an eating disorder, an illness or the effects of dementia, we work with their doctor and dietitian and take the pressure out of mealtimes. Small portions, familiar foods and unhurried company achieve far more than persuasion. For residents with dementia we hold routines steady, keep familiar objects to hand and take our lead from the person in front of us. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and families are welcome to call in and see the home as it really is.
